Bushido
The laws of Bushido:

Honesty & Justice AKA Gi:
Be acutely honest throughout your dealings with people. Believe in justice, not from other people, but from yourself. ...There is only right and wrong.

Polite Courtesy AKA Rei:
People have no need to be cruel you do not have to prove your strength. Be courteous even to your enemies. Without this outward show of respect humanity is nothing more than animals.

Heroic Courage AKA Yu:
Rise up above the masses of people who are afraid to act. It is absoluetly dangerous it is risky ...it is also living. Heroic courage is not blind it is intelligent & strong.

Honor AKA Meiyo:
You have only one judge of honor ...yourself. You cannot hide from yourself.

Compassion AKA Jin:
Help humanity at every turn. If an opportunity does not present itself then seek one out.

Complete Sincerity AKA Makoto:
Speaking and doing are the same thing. One does not have ''to give his word''.

Duty and Loyalty AKA Chu:
Be loyal to those in your care. To those you are responsible for be fiercely true.

In the event of The world ceasing to be as you know it...I suggest following these laws. These laws served Japan for many many centuries.

Re: Bushido
Thank you for the link to the koans

here's another to multiple Buddhist texts (and those of other ideologies)

[link to www.sacred-texts.com]

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." Re: Bushido
Some books to start with on Zen / spirituality

"Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" Shunryu Suzuki

"Tao te Ching" Lao-tzu (Stephen Addiss + Stanley Lombardo translation- the most accurate translation I've found)

"Shambhala: Sacred Path of the Warrior" Chogyam Trungpa (any book he wrote is very good)

"Bushido: the Spirit of the Samurai" Inazo Nitobe (tough but interesting read, written in the 1800s)

Dantes, do you do zazen? Since I've moved back to Canada, I find it harder to find the time, and my spiritual life has suffered after living in Asia and practicing meditation.

Re: Bushido
This is the Way for men who want to learn my strategy:

Do not think dishonestly.

The Way is in training.

Become acquainted with every art.

Know the Ways of all professions.

Distinguish between gain and loss in worldly matters.

Develop intuitive judgment and understanding for everything.

Perceive those things which cannot be seen.

Pay attention even to trifles.

Do nothing which is of no use.

from a master of budo, Musashi Miyamoto
"Gentlemen!
I despise each and every one of you. The people who have supported this worthless nation, this system is YOU! To be precise, The majority of the people who are watching this are my Sworn Enemies! I am calling upon the minority among you people."

Two thousand years ago, a Roman Senator suggested that all slaves wear white armbands to better identify them.
-"No," said a wiser Senator. "If they see how many of them there are, they may revolt."
