The Milky Way IS our galaxy. I think you meant "outside our Milky Way." Good find, though! --mf "I'm the bride at every funeral, I'm the corpse at every wedding..." --Brother Theodore ... and don't blame me-- I voted for Bob Barr in 2008. I mean, has it just happened or something? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1168690Its motion and position show it is part of a stream of stars that are the leftovers of an encounter between the Milky Way galaxy and one of its satellite galaxies |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 973304Its motion and position show it is part of a stream of stars that are the leftovers of an encounter between the Milky Way galaxy and one of its satellite galaxies Thanks for that. I did a little research myself, and it turns out it might not be a planet, and it might not be from beyond our galaxy! "Although it's still not certain that a planet is behind the variations in the star's speed, all the findings so far point that way, says NASA astronomer Steven Pravdo. To be sure, astronomers will need to run other tests. Ideally, they would look for the planet to pass in front of the star, but that would work only if the planet orbits at just the right angle, he says. "The claim that it's extragalactic is kind of a guess," says Pravdo. It's possible the star was originally part of the Milky Way when it collided with the other galaxy billions of years ago" - from Sciencemag.org |

While it's technically possible that the planet was born in the Milky Way and then stripped from its parent star by the interloping HIP 13044, the odds of that happening are minuscule, researchers said. So HIP 13044 almost certainly has an extragalactic origin. "We can be pretty sure about that," Klement told SPACE.com. "Stellar encounters in the Milky Way essentially don't occur. The chance that the star captured the planet from another star by an encounter is very, very unlikely." Like they knew meteorites found in Antarctica came from Mars? shift happens |

Sorry skitzo! I think this is amazing. From another galaxy...that is mind numbing. I agree! I do sometimes question their ability to KNOW so much but the info is extraordinary and makes you think abotu just how small we are.. Xx Total OUtcast |

Could it be the planet X that was discovered years ago? Not to be Debbie Downer here but if this thing is from another galaxy it would be possible it is still moving and this could be an early warning. OH SHIT! DOOM!!!!!!!!!!!! |

"And though I believe in the ineffable glory of God, and though I might have experienced the undeniable reality of the Deity, and though I may know the secrets of the ages, these do not fulfill the Love in my heart. But to Change and Be and Do and dissolve both the subject of my person and the object of my God into the fluency of Empirical Providence. The Way, the Truth, and the Life." |
