Thanks for that. I did a little research myself, and it turns out it might not be a planet, and it might not be from beyond our galaxy!

Ideally, they would look for the planet to pass in front of the star, but that would work only if the planet orbits at just the right angle, he says. "The claim that it's extragalactic is kind of a guess," says Pravdo. Well color me cynical but......


While it's technically possible that the planet was born in the Milky Way and then stripped from its parent star by the interloping HIP 13044, the odds of that happening are minuscule, researchers said.

So HIP 13044 almost certainly has an extragalactic origin.

"We can be pretty sure about that," Klement told SPACE.com. "Stellar encounters in the Milky Way essentially don't occur. The chance that the star captured the planet from another star by an encounter is very, very unlikely."


Like they knew meteorites found in Antarctica came from Mars?

Not to be Debbie Downer here but if this thing is from another galaxy it would be possible it is still moving and this could be an early warning.
