Coffee
Is it really better to keep it in the freezer? Is there a big difference between preground and whole bean ground before making it?

Yes its better to keep in the freezer and yes grinding your own makes a difference.

Its so easy, most food blenders come with an attachment you can use for grinding. Get yourself a Moka Pot and you are good to go

Yes, the essential oils will turn rancid rather quickly, especially if ground and not frozen.

We use whole bean Kona and keep it in the freezer. Maybe I have an unsophisticated palate but I don't see a big difference between this and preground from CB&TL.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks on it while I was waiting for my morning coffee.

Re: Coffee
If you make espresso, it's essential to buy whole bean and grind it yourself. With a burr grinder. A Capresso Infinity grinder is pretty decent and costs around $100.

Freezer is the way to store your beans. Beans should be fairly fresh roasted. The stuff in cans (e.g. Illy, Maxwell House) is already too old, but that's a lot better than getting it preground.

Re: Coffee
If you get fresh beans it is better to buy it 1lb at a time and grind only as you use it. The only reason to freeze is for long term storage. There is a HUGE difference in taste if you buy good fresh organic roasted beans. The difference is like night and day. Try drinking it without any cream & sugar the right mix of beans can taste magical. Coffee has more anti-oxidants than cranberry juice. Don't drink more than a few cups per day though or you will suffer ill effects of too much caffeine.

Yeah, I just bought a bag of Starbucks (did you know they have naturally flavored coffees?!I normally don't buy flavored because it's artificial) and it says right on here "To preserve that fresh, just-roasted flavor, keep this bag sealed tight in a cabinet (not the refrigerator) and brew within a week of opening." But you're probably right. :)

Re: Coffee
Experts say no to freezing coffee. It is best to buy smaller packages of freshly roasted whole beans. Coffee starts loosing its flavor 3 minutes after grinding and 3 weeks after roasting. When I have to pick it up at the grocery, I really like the old fashioned Eight O'Clock brand of coffee best. But if I have the money and the time, I buy from a small locally owned shop who roasts their own beans (it is worth the trip, just for the smell when you walk in the door). The owner there tells me starbucks burns their coffee beans intentionally to disquise the off taste of cheaper beans grown in places that once grew things like garlic and onions. I don't know how true that is, but know I don't care for Starbucks beans. Fresh market in our area carries a terrific coffee brand called "Intelligencia". I try to pick it up there when it goes on sale, especially the black cat espresso blend.

Do NOT keep coffee in the freezer, it disrupts the balance of oils that make the coffee taste the way it should.

If you want the best coffee, get freshly roasted beans at least every two weeks and grind immediately before you brew the coffee.

The best methods of brewing coffee are steam espresso, french press, or turkish if you want a "meal".

Enjoy!
