Very Damn Tired Of Losing All Work Typed If The Window Bumps Forward Or Reverse
Ever happen to you?

Type several paragraphs and then bump back one window and lose the typing?

This is the only forum I know of that does that. Others keep your work in the window so you lose no content.

I must have too big hands for a full-sized laptop.
Sure sucks to lose the effort for no reason.

Yea, OP, I do. I got into the habit of copying my work frequently.
This laptop's keyboard is so much smaller than a normal one
that I always end up hitting the wrong key.

Yeah, I hate when that happens too. I have been trying to get in the habit of copying the text periodically as I work. Also always a good idea to hit copy before you hit post or send, in case it gets eaten when you send it.

Re: Very Damn Tired Of Losing All Work Typed If The Window Bumps Forward Or Reverse
As much as I enjoy the GLP experience, since none of the other 20 someodd forums I am member of "lose" the post if the window changes, I figure this to be a deliberate programming decision or just stupidity on the part of the software designer.

No other discussion forum loses or erases the typed material until it is deleted consciously by delete button or keyed deletion or perhaps highlighted and typed over.

It is bullshit to inadvertently move forward back in your browser, if still in the same program and lose your work. You can move to answer a PM while still posting or making a reply on all other forum software I've seen and NOT lose the text you were working on when you come back to your window.

It is also an extreme Bullshit policy to allow Member OPs to ban members who make dissenting comments or pose non-aggressive and non-insulting opposition within the scope of the topic posted for discussion.

This same OP banning policy ought to apply in reverse to prohibit anyone who has banned another member from posting on threads authored by persons they've banned.

There ought also be a waiting period applicable to new members so they can get the flavor of the GLP forum in its openness and spirit of discussion. Those newbies who ban persons for not exactly agreeing with them or politely questioning their motives are not showing tolerance or openness to investigation which should mark all participation here.

I have never banned anyone from one of my threads.

Guess I'd better post this now before my clumsy XXL hands lose another 5mins of work...

Thanks for the moderator attention.
Dr. P. has posted stuff on my threads in the past. I might have argued with you then, before you were a moderator; still would, but I wouldn't ban you and would hope not to be banned. Seems we ought to tolerate each other short of making threats to do violence...

Oh - I know why this happens OP.
Normally, pages are stored in the cache memory, and if you go back and forward it pulls it right up instantly, and for such memory pages it remembers typing.

GLP's server + page code has the force refresh / no-cache turned on, so that each page you move to MUST be loaded fresh from the server; it will not remember it from the browser cache. Notice the browser redownloads the whole page when you press Back.
The intention is to keep the content fresh because its a forum..

The fix is for the admins to exclude the bbs/reply.php file from the no-cache policy.

There is a firefox addon called "Lazarus" (not to confuse with the Pascal IDE of the same name)

This addon will allow you to restore the whole form (right click -> restore form) at any moment, even if your browser or your entire computer crashed while or before submitting the page.

About 6 years ago there was a lot of non-pertinent comment being left, usually like the last sentence or just plain FU (not Felix Unger). Also used to be a number of AC and registered members who would post multiple times on a thread to impersonate a wide-scale of dissent.

I was the first to request using the last 4 digits of the IP address as an "identifier" and also requested that the OP be able to delete bullshit posts that had no relation to the thread. Saw this thread recently in my archive saved posts.

I did have a forced-shutdown a few weeks ago and was surprised that the lazarus or whatever that brought-back the post I had been working on....

Thing is, losing the posting window content happens all the time, so no lazarus save can be effected.

The people who are "perverted shitbags" around here in my book are the pseudo/carnal-hearted Christians who ban those who disagree or post alternate witness (as I often do) and then add comments to posts authored by those they've banned.

I had one newby-bitch called "The Watcher" pull this shit recently. Ban me, fine; just don't come interfere with my posts. Fair is fair.

Anyone bans another ought to be excluded from posting on threads of those they've "banned".

Ought not to allow banning for having difference of opinion or identifying someone as a liar or shill.

I have had a number of excellent interactions with those who have intensely disagreed with me, and been Enabled to post some great witness.

I registered on this site in Nov/Dec of 2003. Was never much of a forum participant anywhere until March 2004. Read my THIS IS IT! THE TIME IS NOW! thread to understand why I write here and elsewhere.

None of the other forum venues I post on "lose" your work if you navigate away from a window. Many don't allow editing after a certain time-period, but none lose the work in the insertion window the way this site does.

why not have the last 4 IP # digits be a part of every Anon Coward post?
Quote

Want to preserve "anonymous coward" posts but also show a unique identifier so many of the scams that go on here in GLP Forum could no longer be perpetrated?

Why not include the last 4 IP digits on every a c post? This is already done with the date and time stamps. Just add an IP stamp.

There would be no way to track anyone with only 1/4 of the IPS #, thus preserving anonymity; a hallowed GLP tradition.

Yet, how many spammers and other thread disrupters come here and play "ring the doorbell and run away" games? Lots. How many hoax replies get spammed when an a c wants to foster the idea of widely dissenting oppinion?

The time has come to have some accountability to the other posters here. No doubt we will come to see the same a c numbers anyway, but knowing that there is only a 1 in ten thousand chance of 2 people having the same # would dissuade many from putting up juvenile posts.
----------------------------------------------------

I have made many contributions to this forum. Arguably the "identifier" solved much of the credibility issue this site suf.fered from and made it a serious internet resource.

Something else I would like is to be able to download all of my posts and remarks without having to do a cut and paste or visit each thread. Undoubtedly the site owner can do this.

We are entering an era where a hard copy of your online comments might preserve you from govt nastiness or being setup. No need to elaborate. Would be great to have this added to the Advanced Search function, with only the Actual Signed-In Member able to do a download dump to DVD type function on their own posts....

Here is my thread from 6 years ago about allowing OP to delete the meaningless "expletive" posts from their thread. Moose was 2nd string banana Moderator at GLP in those days, when elaine owned the board.

Moose: why not enable the OP to control the thread deletions?
Quote

Some software will allow the Original Poster to manage their thread.

If you guys want to eliminate the "junk" here, start with the innane replies, the homophobic rants, the emoticon posts, and the no comment bumps. You could allow them, but not have to store them for more than an hour or two.

These things could be presented to those following the thread, but would not have to be preserved. The OP could take responsibility for managing the thread. So much in this forum is posted without even a comment, much less a reasoned discussion of the topic being replied to; this would mean the OP would have to stay involved in the topic they posted.

Any OP who deleted discussion that was at odds with the post would prove themselves a propagandist-spammer and would have few meaningful replies on their threads.

I see no need to preserve a string of expletives, (for example), if they do not offer even some discussion of the topic.

Re: Very Damn Tired Of Losing All Work Typed If The Window Bumps Forward Or Reverse
OP, typically I find very few forums support saving functionality, and it is a dangerous gambit to either rely on or assume it exists as, if the occassion of writing is important, and it doesn't - all your work goes with it.

As a forum-goer I've learnt various tricks, tips and techniques you [and others] might find useful to prevent the loss of writings. They are as follows:

1) The paragraph rule.

If your post or writing is at least a paragraph (3-5 lines) or greater (definitely after two paragraphs), progressively 'save it' [detailed below].

2) 'Quick-Save'

Quick-Save is very simple and can save a lot of hassle. All you do is press Ctrl + A (select all) and press Ctrl + C (copy). Do this after every finished paragraph (see above). Be wary of copying other things. If you're dealing with multiple quotes or are breaking a quote up into parts, you need the next one...

3) Notepad (Segment Saving) [Short-Term]

Open [I keep mine pinned to the windows menu] a new copy of notepad (no need to save at this stage) and simply 'QuickSave' the data, then paste it to notepad, spacing new 'saves' with two lines. You may also want to copy enquire quotes on seperate lines (for multiquoting) here as well too, so you don't have to 'requote'.

4) Notepad (Post Saving) [Long-Term]

If you are writing a hefty post with a lot of rebuttals, quotes, replies, commentary and the like, you need to be very wary of the other kind of data loss - power outages and spontaneous switch-off syndrome (especially if you are a SLIder).

When a post seems like a lot of hassle to write, seems extremely good or has some very important information, stop immediately, QuickSave, copy to notepad and SAVE IT! Don't worry about the name - even "a.txt" is fine (unless it overwrites of course).

5) Law of Proportionately Inverse Importance

You will not believe the number of times I've lost huge posts. The more important/vital a post is - the more frequently you must save as the greater the importance of the post, the less likely it will successfully post and more likely it will be lost to the 'depths of time'.

Follow Segment Saving (but pressing Ctrl + S in notepad to save it to disk) very frequently. If in doubt? Segment the post into section and post seperately.

6) Law of Long-Loading

If you've just clicked 'Post', and it's taking longer than normal (EG more than a second, 2 seconds tops), immediately click the text box, press Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C! Suspiciously long loading can only mean one thing - the browser can't send the data and you are mere seconds away from an 'error can't send the post because of leaves on the line' screen and thus losing all your work!

You'll need lightning-fast reactions to properly benefit because the time-frame is usually roughly only 5 seconds...

7) Open in a seperate tab or window

If you want the back button to stop triggering - open the 'reply' or 'quote' link (Ctrl + Left Click in IE) in a seperate tab or (Shift + Left Click) in a seperate window. This means there is no history for it to go back to.

Sure, can navigate from one tab to another; but cannot navigate AWAY from the posting window without losing your work; not on this forum, with this software.

Elsewhere, the software preserves the text you've typed even if you navigate back to the thread to look at the post you are replying to. Toggle your back/forward "this window history" keys all you want, you lose no work...

What about shitbirds who ban you from their threads but still post on yours?
Why not have the Ban User feature, or whatever it is preclude the person who bans another from commenting on their threads?

Lots of workarounds, sure!
Can open multiple windows. Great for chatbrats...

Copy your work, had to back when the server was so slow and half the time you had to post more than once.

Copy your work while you write..

But all this bullshit should not be necessary.
Every other forum I visit, saves your work in the posting window unless you cut it, delete it, or log-out.

Not to be too much of a bitcher....

But, on another forum, was just posting 5 paragraphs of material I typed; instead of hitting SUBMIT button, went to forum overview, and then list of all forums on the site.

Quickly navigated back 3 pages using back button and
MY Work Was Still There....

Wow!

Why this site can't be as accommodating I just don't know.
Maybe give those who pay to post here another reason to pony up the money?

All other sites I am member or post on are free to get PM send and replies, and for all other benefits including some newsletters...

On March 8th, I will likely stop giving Christian witness.
7yrs of tribulation from doing this will be enough...

Lost 2 posts yesterday.
What a pain this is to have to save to clipboard or write on Word before posting just to avoid possibility of loss.

Only site I know of where this crap happens.
