I don't have a microwave

fyi...
you can cook anything nearly as fast in a pressure cooker.
and reheating anything can be done in a toaster oven, a steamer, or stove top and it tastes better!

just saying...

doesn't seem like there is a good reason to even own a
microwave.


I like to make popcorn in it...and I'm not going to heat the oven up to make 6 fish sticks for my ten year old...

What is this fascination with nuking stuff?

I don't get it.
Honestly... I don't.

I don't own a microwave. I never will. I have, but I never will again. Back in college I had a fascination with heating up anything that came within a plastic wrapper. Hot Pockets, Ramen, frozen pizza, you name it and I nuked it for 3 minutes.

But in the last few years, I've strayed away from it.

Lately, the conversation has come up a few times and everytime I tell people that I don't own a microwave, they look at you as if you had just told them that you don't know what Facebook is.

Granted, I've never used Twitter either, but that's a whole different conversation...

These people will look at me and honestly ask: Well, how do you cook your food?

Apparently, some people have never heard of skillets, grills, cast iron cookware, dutch ovens, conventional ovens and stoves. You'd swear that millions across America have never cooked a home cooked meal based on the sample size I've gathered across the states in the last few years. It just seems that now anything that takes effort cooking is a lost tradition within American culture. There was a conversation about chicken and there was some leftovers and someone said: Just put that in the microwave for 2 minutes and it tastes amazing.

I should have known better than to tell that person that I was going to just launch that thing in my cast iron skillet and do it there along with other stuff I could add to it.

"No microwave?"
"Nope, I don't own one."
"Why the hell not? It's so much easier! Wow. Never met anyone without a microwave."

Now, I'm sure a LOT of people here can come up with reasons why it's good to NOT own a microwave... like radiation or what not... but to be honest, I just like to make my own food traditionally. I make my own pizza from scratch. Put that sucker in the oven and make that crust crispy and nice and golden. Frozen pizza into a microwave ends up mushy, tasteless, full of preservatives and crap.

I get the convinience, but it almost seems like there are people out there that use a microwave for EVERYTHING. Other thing I've noticed... I seem to eat better since I don't use a microwave. I have a tendency to buy fresher food and support local produce and poultry farmers to get the freshest products and cook it myself. Are we really at a point where we need convinience for everything over better quality and healthier choices... or am I truly one of a kind by not having microwave... or Twitter?

I too do not own a microwave. I have some really old fashioned McCoy and Hull covered brown containers and I heat everything up in them.

I don't own a cell phone either or have anything but dial up and TV antenna. I heat with a wood stove. I parked my car 3 years ago and go to town 2 to 4 times a month with hubby or the kids.

I have loads of books, puzzles, games and seeds. All my choices. "They" could take us back to medieval days and it won't hurt my feelings a bit.

makes you think about all the kids people who from birth/very young age almost all food eaten was microwaved.

Slow kill people! Reality knocking here! Your only good till 65 then your a drain on the economy. Reality here.
