UK 'freedom of press' may be over - Police Ban ITV reporters!
It would seem that the police in the UK now see themselves above any law - we see them arresting people under anti-terror law (oddly called the TERRORISM ACT)...

Now the police are banning the press from public announcements...

ITV News was today banned from a press conference by Avon & Somerset police after broadcasting a critical report on the force's investigation into the murder of Joanna Yeates.

Avon & Somerset constabulary has also complained to the media regulator, Ofcom, about what it claimed was the "unfair, naive and irresponsible reporting" of the case on ITV1's News at Ten last night.

ITV News was the only media organisation excluded from the news conference, at which police revealed Miss Yeates was missing a sock when she was found and made a fresh witness appeal.
The police force suggested it had banned the station because the story – which raised concerns police inconsistencies in the handling of the case – might "hamper" the investigation.

What is the world coming to when the police can decide who can and who can not report on their investigations?

I still believe in freedom of the press but I do object when some reporters are releasing sensitive information that the Killer could use to dispose of items which might otherwise LINK THEM TO THE CRIME.

Did ITV not suggest in this particular murder case that a sock was missing and that could have been used as a murder weapon and the police thought he was keeping it as a trophy.

After this information is released by the press what do you think the first thing the killers going to do?

HAND HIMSELF IN HOLDING UP THE SOCK?

So in THIS INSTANCE I agree with the police.

I get where you are coming from but I'm with the police on this one. ITV news at ten is the most dumbed down tabloid trash 'news' on the air in all of europe. if you deny them access maybe they will smarten up or just accept that they really only want to talk celebrities, squirrels on waterskis and bad weather on their show and leave important stories to the adults.

Re: UK 'freedom of press' may be over - Police Ban ITV reporters!
The police said in a statement: "As we are still awaiting a response to our complaint it would be inappropriate for us to comment any further at this time."

"A live murder investigation has been underway now for just 12 days and the media have played an important role in helping us to appeal for witnesses. While we appreciate the support we have received so far from most of the media we must step in if we feel coverage will hamper the investigation. Our primary aim will always be to secure justice for Joanna."

ITV News editor-in-chief David Mannion suggested that the police's decision was "irresponsible" and added that it had become "an issue about the freedom of the press", the Guardian reported.

"We stand by our story and we also stand by the procedure which the police have now taken [to complain to Ofcom]. If Ofcom decides to uphold that complaint we will respect that," Mannion told BBC Radio 4's The Media Show, according to the Guardian.

"There's an issue in the interim period if we have a situation where there's numbers of the press summarily banned from press conferences – and that's what happened this morning before the complaint was made," the Guardian quoted him as saying. "We made numerous attempts to contact Avon & Somerset police – between eight and 10 – before the programme went out and didn't get a single response."

A spokesman for ITN, which produces ITV News, said it was "hugely disappointed" by the police's move to "exclude" the broadcaster from the briefing.

Maybe the ITN team should be chastised for their actions but to BAN them is setting a precedent for Nazi style 'police state'!

The POLICE should NEVER be allowed to decide who can be at a PUBLIC forum!

I agree with your point to the extent that the ITN team seem to have been a little irresponsible here.

However...

It should NEVER be the decision of the Police to decide upon the freedom of the press or 'who' should be allowed to report - that is a case for the courts!

I agree with you - other than it should be for the courts to decide NOT the Police.

the police work for the rich uber rich leadership of each country, you really didn't know this?

why do you think they make all the propoganda about how nice the police are to the normal/poor/ slave workers of each country.

most people are brainwashed in to turning on loved ones because, some dudes, wrote a bunch of words on a paper thats put in a book and the book has strong big dudes to back up the "rules", wrote in it.

the book could say anything, or the rules could be anything,
been this way for ever.
can't say it's any kinda shock, what you made the thread about.

hang on a minute. there are two different things here. being allowed to go to the press conference and ask dumb ITV questions to the police so that tom bradbury looks like he gives a shit about Jo Yeates and the second issue is banning ITV from reporting at all. ITV is free to use the pool camera footage from the press conference and do their dumb, emotional blackmail style reporting all they want, unfortunately.

Of course I know this.

The shock is this is pretty much a first for the UK...

ITV (Channel) and ITN (News team) are one of the biggest news outlets in the UK...

For the Police to do this after a little criticism is setting a dangerous precedent for the police to 'do whatever they want'...

This needs public outrage in the UK or we end up having to accept it -we need to speak up NOW!

Before this is common place!
