Variety of birds...they even talk into the night.

A few nights ago, I heard peepers, I thought my ears
were playing tricks on me...weird.

Re: Birds, What we are not watching for: Do you still have birds of any kind in your area?
SW Ohio. I've been looking out the window for like 15 minutes and haven't seen one bird. I have a crabapple tree in my back yard that the starlings love...nothing. I called my mom a block away because she has a ton of feeders and has a crazy amount of birds. She said she's seen a few cardinals, wrens and sparrows today, but they usually empty her feeders every day. She hasn't been filling them. She thought it was because she was out of town for 3 days and they got used to not eating, but she's been back for over a week. She talked to my grandma a town away who said she's seen the hugs flocks of starlings going crazy today.

no birds here havent been any at my feeders for two days now.

Were the feeders full all the time?

It can take them a few day to know that food is available again.

Where are you?

Re: Birds, What we are not watching for: Do you still have birds of any kind in your area?
I live about 50 miles west of Philadelphia. We have had zero birds at our backyard feeder for 3 days. In the preceding weeks we had birds feeding all the time. Also, I received a window feeder as a Christmas gift. I hung it over the weekend and filled it with seed, but no birds have come.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1081321

How long was the feeder empty for before you filled it again? Or was it full the whole time - and they just vanished?

Re: Birds, What we are not watching for: Do you still have birds of any kind in your area?
Well,
we have a literal flock of magpie, that usually love to tease my dog. Probably 10-15...
I have only seen one of them and I hear only one calling out right now.

I just took a mini walk, just observing.Nada.
Thinking back, the last time I remember seeing birds was Mid-December, the finches. Of course, during the holidays, we get pretty spun up in the season and I was playing nurse to sick family, too.

I am glad to see reports of birds in some peoples areas. Keep them coming, hopefully the birds are coming too.

Re: Birds, What we are not watching for: Do you still have birds of any kind in your area?
Colorado here.. We have a pasture of cows across from our house, we have trees everywhere, we went to another field yesterday to feed some horses, and it occurred to us.. no birds! The ONLY birds we have seen in the area in the last several days was one small flock of about 15 unidentified small greyish birds that flew above us as we went down the road.

Looked out windows to ever side of our house right now and not one single bird in a tree, flying, nada. We are in the part of Colorado that isn't snowy or too cold all winter.. West of Pueblo.

Re: Birds, What we are not watching for: Do you still have birds of any kind in your area?
There seems to be two main things going on:

1) Long term reduction in numbers.

But, perhaps more importantly,:

2) Birds vanishing the last THREE days. Unless these were ALL because the bird feeder was left for empty for too long?
If the bird feeders weren't empty for long, then this is a major indiction of an big earthquake within days (which ties in with all the nutty cat and dog stories on the magnet thread).

Me again. Just saw two birds fly from a tree a few houses away. And I forgot to say before that my mom had a robin in her ornamental pear tree. I'm surprised there was a robin here because until last week we'd had snow on the ground since the first of December.

I honestly don't think my mom's was because her feeders were empty for 3 days. They've gone away for longer than that before and it didn't happen.

Which is the magnet thread? I want to see that.

I have a bird feeder right at my home office window, been watching all the local birds all day. Lot's of doves, cardinals, etc.

Not one bird today after 7/8 AM , been outside and have only heard/seen one bird, other than that, it's been quite all day. Odd.

Wow. Hadn't been on that thread much. And my compass was off on my droid and I still can't find my normal compass. God, I got to get it together just incase TSHTF. Need a reliable magnetic compass.

My dog is the normal, lazy snuggling dog. Though, less obedient lately, outside. Won't listen to me at all. My cat is behaving normally.

Re: Birds, What we are not watching for: Do you still have birds of any kind in your area?
I just moved back to my area after a 10 year absence and was shocked at the large number of very large birds I see every day. I don't remember ever seeing this many large birds here.

We have hawks out the wazoo - I hear them all the time to the point that it is a racket, we were visited by a bald eagle at Thanksgiving, we have a flock of turkeys at least 30 strong that runs our neighbrhood, and we have often a tree full of roosting buzzards.

So far, no massive bird deaths where I live (Southern NJ) but we had a big fish kill in the Delaware Bay a few months back.

Also, I don't know about blackbirds or other small birds - I notice the big birds because they are so dramatic and almost look out of place in NJ.

Please do me (us?) a favor:

I live about 15 miles north of Labarre, La where the bird kill was yesterday.
No birds at all yesterday, anywhere. Heard one crow at about daylight this morning and saw one old mockingbird that acted kind of sick sitting on the power line.
Usually we have HUGE flocks of blackbirds in the fields by the house, but not one for the past couple of days. And, the flocks of robins have disappeared as well. No flocks of ducks or cormorants (water turkeys). The duck hunters are disgusted because there's nothing to hunt.
It is spooky quiet out there.

N.E here. I noticed about 3 days ago in the morning that Birds were singing, but they sounded like 'Spring Birds' way too early for that here. I also heard them in the morning from my window I smoke out of. Noticed today in the early morning that maybe 1 Bird was out there singing. I have been looking everyday becuase of this Bird die-off. Something very, very strange is happening. I also noticed no Squirrels were out this morning.

This morning in N. NJ, I was flock of mixed birds flying in a chaotic fashion....sea gull, pigeons, sparrows, and starlings.I never seen different kinds of birds together like this before. They were also flying erratically with near midair collisions. Freaking weird.

Also, my neighbor has lost a couple ducks to something - we suspect an owl.

But come to think of it, i saw a few HUGE swarms of birds flying erratically on at least 3 different occasions. Everey occasion was 100's of birds, one time it must have been thousands. I'm not a birdwatcher so I have no idea what kind of birds these were. I live in the midwest, it may have been migrations, if they were leaving it was awful late late November/December I would guesstimate?

Has most of this been since December 21...the day of the eclipse and winter solstice on same day? AND massive sun action.
