Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1154424Actually it is crazy when there are in fact and have been Americans starving themselves to death just so they don't have to think that they might be overweight. The Anit-Obesity movement has such a fevor that one could call it the Pro-Anorexia Movement. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77004061 United States 09/11/2019 04:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The total economic cost of overweight and obesity in the United States is $270 billion per year while the cost in Canada is about $30 billion a year, a new study shows. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1136949 The $300 billion total cost in the United States and Canada is the result of: increased need for medical care ($127 billion); loss of worker productivity due to higher rates of death ($49 billion); loss of productivity due to disability of active workers ($43 billion); and loss of productivity due to total disability ($72 billion), said the Society of Actuaries (SOA). People are considered overweight if their body-mass index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 and obese if their BMI is higher than 30. An SOA online survey of 1,000 adults found that 83 percent would be willing to follow a healthy lifestyle program if they received incentives from their health insurance plan. Without people being willing to be FAT the restaurant business would be in the Crapper!! Go to any "buffet" and look around. They have ONLY tables with chairs for a reason! No way 3/4 of the people there could fit into an old style restaurant booth table. Do you really want to kill off that entire part of the economy? SHAME on anybody who shames fat people!! Those types are intentionally trying to ruin a large part of the economy!! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1125579 US has roughly ten times the population which means Canada pays more per capita. There are a lot of fat people, mostly millennials. You don't see a whole lot of obese people over fifty, but literally tonnes of them in their twenties and thirties. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1136949[link to news.yahoo.com] They want a special bribe to lose weight and be fit... Why not just charge inflated premiums like they do for smokers? The incentive would then be: lower premiums. But... since most of these people probably don't buy their own insurance (or only pay a small share after their employer pays most), this may not do much. The employers who provide the insurance could pass the increased premium on to them, or give them some other kind of incentive. Why not look at the smoker premiums and how all that works? Seems like an easy parallel. Unless, of course, obesity is not the person's fault or choice or whatever, like smoking is a choice. I'm sure that will be the argument.
