EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE TO LAST UNTIL SPRING:NOAA
The La Niña event established this year is particularly intense and maybe the most severe in a 100 years. Such events are known to give warm sea surface temperatures and greater evaporation giving heavy rains in the Western Pacific in Australia, less rain in the Eastern Pacific on the western coast of S. America (coastal Chile and Peru) but increased rain on the east coast in southern Brazil and northern Argentina.

EL NIÑO/SOUTHERN OSCILLATION (ENSO)
DIAGNOSTIC DISCUSSION

issued by
CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER/NCEP
6 January 2011

ENSO Alert System Status: La Niña Advisory

Spanish Version

Synopsis: La Niña is expected to continue well into the Northern Hemisphere spring 2011

A moderate-to-strong La Niña continued during December 2010 as reflected by well below-average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across the equatorial Pacific Ocean (Fig. 1). All of the Niño indices were –1.5oC at the end of December, except for the easternmost Niño-1+2 region (Fig. 2). The subsurface oceanic heat content (average temperatures in the upper 300m of the ocean, Fig. 3) continued to reflect a large reservoir of below-average temperatures at depth in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific (Fig. 4). Convection remained enhanced over Indonesia and suppressed over the western and central equatorial Pacific (Fig. 5). Also, enhanced low-level easterly trade winds and anomalous upper-level westerly winds continued over the equatorial Pacific. Collectively, these oceanic and atmospheric anomalies reflect the ongoing La Niña.

The current ENSO model forecasts have not changed significantly compared to last month (Fig. 6). La Niña is currently near its peak and is expected to persist into the Northern Hemisphere spring 2011 at a lesser intensity. Thereafter, there remains considerable uncertainty as to whether La Niña will last into the Northern Hemisphere summer (as suggested by the NCEP CFS and a few other models), or whether there will be a transition to ENSO-neutral conditions (as suggested by the CPC CON and a majority of the other models).

Likely La Niña impacts during January-March 2011 include suppressed convection over the west-central tropical Pacific Ocean, and enhanced convection over Indonesia. Impacts in the United States include an enhanced chance of above-average precipitation in the Pacific Northwest, Northern Rockies (along with a concomitant increase in snowfall), Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley. Below-average precipitation is favored across the southwestern and southeastern states. An increased chance of below-average temperatures is predicted for much of the West Coast and northern tier of states (excluding New England), and a higher possibility of above-average temperatures is forecast for much of the southern and central U.S. (see 3-month seasonal outlook released on December 16th, 2010). While seasonal temperature and precipitation patterns in the U.S. are strongly influenced by La Niña, these signals can be modified by other factors, such as the Arctic Oscillation (AO)/ North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO).

This discussion is a consolidated effort of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NOAA's National Weather Service, and their funded institutions. Oceanic and atmospheric conditions are updated weekly on the Climate Prediction Center web site (El Niño/La Niña Current Conditions and Expert Discussions). Forecasts for the evolution of El Niño/La Niña are updated monthly in the Forecast Forum section of CPC's Climate Diagnostics Bulletin. The next ENSO Diagnostics Discussion is scheduled for 10 February 2011. (but where is it?)

Re: EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE TO LAST UNTIL SPRING:NOAA
A major La Niña event continues to affect the Pacific Basin. Long-range forecast models surveyed by the Bureau suggest that the La Niña is likely to persist into the southern hemisphere autumn.

All climate indicators of ENSO remain beyond La Niña thresholds. The tropical Pacific Ocean remains much cooler than average for this time of year, with temperatures below the surface up to 4 °C below normal in central and eastern parts comparable to the La Niña event of 1988. Trade winds are stronger than average, while cloud patterns continue to show a typical La Niña signature with suppressed cloudiness in tropical areas near the dateline. The Southern Oscillation Index SOI value for December of +27 is the highest December SOI value on record, as well as being the highest value for any month since November 1973.

La Niña periods are generally associated with above normal winter, spring and summer rainfall, particularly over eastern and northern Australia. The current event has contributed to 2010 being Australia’s the third wettest year on record, and Queensland having its wettest December on record. During La Niña periods, Tropical Cyclone occurrence for northern Australia is typically higher than normal during the cyclone season November-April, while summer daytime temperatures are often below average, particularly in areas experiencing higher than normal rainfall.

The influence of the Indian Ocean Dipole IOD on Australian rainfall is limited during the months from December through to April.

er.. I thought that is sort of what happens in the La Nina years?

The two variations are coupled: the warm oceanic phase, El Niño, accompanies high air surface pressure in the western Pacific, while the cold phase, La Niña, accompanies low air surface pressure in the western Pacific.

THERE HAS BEEN PLENTY OF WARNING!!

this was issued in October

Seasonal Outlook 2010-11 for Queensland and the Coral Sea Region

La Nina boosts the odds of Queensland having an active cyclone season.

Queensland may experience above average tropical cyclone activity this coming season, with up to six cyclones developing in the Coral Sea. It is also likely to be wetter than normal in most parts.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Queensland Regional Director, Jim Davidson, said this is because we're now in a La Nina climate phase, which he expects will remain the dominating influence through the Spring and Summer months.

La Nina events are usually associated with above normal rainfall across much of Queensland and enhanced tropical cyclone activity in the Coral Sea.

Mr Davidson said "What this translates to is where historically we could expect an average of four cyclones a season in the Coral Sea, we now expect the number to be potentially higher, but the number of cyclones actually making landfall can be quite variable from season to season."

"However, under these conditions, we have a good chance of a cyclone crossing the coast before the year is out." he said.

Mr Davidson urged Queenslanders to "prepare early not only for cyclones but also for floods as we have already experienced record September rainfalls across the state."

"Preparation is the key to safety, and we encourage communities to factor in the possibility of a destructive cyclone or major flood into their pre-season planning." said Mr Davidson.

It is neither El Nino OR La Nina but the judgment of God upon the people of this earth. Keep watching.

Does El Nino cause volcanic eruptions, animal die-offs, global government collapses, sink holes, earthquakes, tsunamis, solar flares, plagues, global rumors of nuclear war, pole shift anomalies, weakening magnetosphere, etc., ALL SIMULTANEOUSLY?

I will give you flooding and crop failures but, honestly, how are all of the rest explained...and, did I mention, SIMULTANEOUSLY?

Extreme La Niña brings illness and misery to Peru Chrystelle Barbier
Wednesday, August 25th 2010, 10:31 AM GMT

Mass of polar air also hangs over Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil

Dionisia was waiting her turn in the crowded medical centre, her baby bundled up on her back with a manta, the traditional multicoloured Andean cloth. "My son has got a problem with his lungs," explained the young mother, who believes that it is due to the cold spell that has hit Lima.

Dionisia lives in Manchay to the east of the Peruvian capital, a sprawl of plywood houses with makeshift roofs of corrugated iron, plastic or cardboard that offer little protection from the winds that sweep over the hills.

For the first time in 40 years, temperatures in Lima fell to 8.8C at the end of July. Since then they have hovered around 13-15C. Houses are poorly insulated in Lima, and according to Percy Mosca of the Peruvian department of meteorology and hydrology, "the cold is made worse by the unusually strong winds in the region, as well as high humidity of more than 80% and sometimes even 95%".

Article continues below this advert:

"It's so cold your bones ache," said Dionisia. The whole of Peru is having an unusual cold spell as a result of La Niña, a cyclical climatic phenomenon leading to a cooling of the Pacific Ocean. But the drop in temperatures is also due to a mass of cold air from the south pole, which has also affected Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil.

Unusually low temperatures of 10C have even reached the Amazonian forest, which is more used to recording figures of 20-30C.

The Peruvian government is particularly concerned about the extent and duration of this bout of cold weather, which has hit 13 regions, about half the country. "We have sent reinforcements to the medical centres and launched vaccination programmes, not only in the Andes where we do them every year, but in Amazonia as well," said Aquiles Vilchez, who is in charge of epidemiology at the ministry of health.

There has also been an increase in the number of cases of pneumonia. "However, the number of deaths due to such respiratory diseases is lower than last year," he stressed.

Vilchez believes this shows that past experience has helped the country deal with the cold spell. Nevertheless, 250 children aged under five have died in Peru from cold-related respiratory diseases, mostly pneumonia, since the beginning of the year. Of these 64 came from the high Andes region of Puno, where temperatures sometimes fall below -20C.

Road Rules Still Apply

Police would like to remind motorists of road rules after reports that sight-seers are disregarding basic traffic laws and are hampering emergency service vehicle access to flood affected areas.

Brisbane District Disaster Coordinator Assistant Commissioner Peter Martin said that sight-seers are parking illegally, accessing closed roads and putting themselves, the community and emergency service personnel at risk.

“Traffic patrols have not ceased simply because we are responding to a disaster. Police are actively patrolling our streets and will be enforcing road closures and basic traffic laws,” he said.

“Police continue to urge residents not to access flood affected areas and to stay off the roads if possible.

“Please help us help the community by obeying road rules. Don’t park illegally, don’t block road access, don’t try to access closed roads and please obey police direction and traffic diversions,” said Assistant Commissioner Martin.

This depression doesn't need to be a cyclone to be terribly damaging the way things are are at the moment, and these depressions are just the first ones of the season!

so I don't want TO SEEM PANICKY.. or anything
BUT...

look at this system..
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

it pretty much full to the brim..

SO.. these rain filled tropical depressions will be pouring millions of mega litres into that basin from now until AUTUMN !

next thing I would like to point out here is that the government has been fully aware(see above)since at least October of how bad this was going to be and they have chosen to play it by ear instead of putting out information and early warnings... because it would panic the economy ..tourism... etc

I feel bad for any tourists that have gone to QLD and been caught up in this mess..

no conspiracy here... move along..
