Re: Who is your favorite TV survival expert?
Well I voted for Bear Grylls. I don't care how fake he is, it's all about the entertainment value when I turn on that tv. The 'survival tips' are useless to me as I doubt I'm going to find myself having to swim across the Amazon, climb up steep cliffs or cross icy Siberia on foot. So it all comes down to making it look dramatic and entertaining as possible, and that's what Bear does.

On the other hand, that 'Survivorman' guy is dead boring. He has no personality, it's just Discovery channel's way of cashing in on the genre and capturing the zombie audience out there who will watch anything - even if it's dull as fuck and they'll never find themselves in these positions anyway.

Lowest common denominator bullcrap. Even Man Vs Wild reruns are not so exciting watching second or third time around, because you've seen it all before. If I was to be honest, perhaps the best show of them all was 'Worst Case Scenario' - sure it was sensationalised to hell but and aimed at the prime time popcorn-eating masses but shit at least it was exciting.

Re: Who is your favorite TV survival expert?
My take is Bear does a lot of shit that seems in line with SERE training
Les does it all alone but seems to suffer through it.
Dave Canterbury and Myke Hawke bring the American military side/aspects of it to the table
Cody Lundin has a shitload of aboriginal skills and tries to work with nature rather than fight it.
I think Ray Mears is the one who rather than just surviving has the bushcraft skills to live in the wilds for an extended period of time.
I really have no favorite as i have books and/or DVD's of all the guys above and a few others who are really good but don't have television exposure

CODY LUNDIN

I took his week long desert survival class - - - he's the real deal and a great person and teacher! His book "When All Hell Breaks Loose" is a must read!

It does THAT, too? You must show me later! laugh
Well it seems so real I can see it
And it seems so real I can feel it
And it seems so real I can taste it
And it seems so real I can hear it
So why can't I touch it?
So why can't I touch it?

I like Bear for the entertainment value, Les Stroud is OK, but I only really pay attention to the episodes that pertain to my geographic area(his Northern Ontario ones). Ray Mears has the most useful info I think. Outside of TV, there is of course Ron Hood. His DVDs rock.

I voted "Les Stroud" but I think the "Dual Survival" guys are pretty good too.

Honestly though, I've learned things from all of them (including Bear Grylls-- but more often than not with him it's "do the exact opposite of this" if you know what I mean..)

Yeah bro Ron is my personal favorite but most don't know who he is due to no televison exposure so that's why he is not on the list. Dave did you get that Anaconda for Christmas?
