Well I had a backpack, and a book in my hand and the best part was on the walk to the subway this morning I kept thinking about how puffy my coat is and that I couldnt tell whether my purse was on my arm or not... shoulda paid more attention to that.

I sure do hope an immigrant from Harlem returnes your purse to you, They are more trustworthy than the scum that lives there...

Nope, filed all the paper work with lost property. Even if they do have it there it takes them 10 days to process anything. So lame.

I talked to the man at Deli over in Harlem where my school is, he said it happens to people who are reading/ or sleeping on the train all the time. Though I agree I probably just forgot my purse, he said if you're distracted people just grab it while you're not looking. He said the odds of it turning up at lost and found are close to zero, especially since it was a name brand purse (it was a present, I dont care to pay more for something because it has someone's name on it).

It sucks, but I learned I need to be more careful I guess.

My brother got a call from the 3rd district transit police, they recovered some of my items.

The items recovered:
My passport
Drivers license
debit cards
student ID
grocery list from 2 weeks ago
a letter my friend wrote to me

items not returned:
the purse itself
$40.00
Unlimited MTA card
pack of cigarettes
makeup

I was born and raised on New York and please use this information for the future all you need to do is explain your situation to a police officer and he or she will give you subway fare to get home. Secondly they would have assisted you in contacting lost and found especially useful would be to contact a subway cop.

If your keys were in your purse you must plan for the worst and have the locks changed on your apartment door otherwise you might get an unexpected visitor.

You must report your passport stolen, the police will let you know whom to contact and I stress this task is one you must do immediately.

Next contact your bank and have your debit cards voided and save any funds you have and of course there is the trip to the DMV to replace your stolen drivers license.

Do not be surprised if someone indeed turns in your purse it might take a little time as most people will simply hand the item found to the first officer they encounter.

I got the passport back along with debit cards and drivers license.

Thanks for your advice, I had already reported the stuff missing, tomorrow I'm going to go back to the local precinct and let them know what was recovered.
