had this happen to an English Bulldog before. Before you go forward, ask about WHICH type of surgery they are calling for- depending on extent of the tear and age/activity level of the dog, there are a couple of different options. I saw a previous poster mentioned the "pins and suture" method which is definitely the cheapest, and held up well for our very-active bully. Some of the other options get more invasive and $$- involving cutting off the top of the joint and turning it 180degrees so there is more bone support. Our vet is great and he actually had us go with "Stage 1," because if it fails, they can still go on to the other methods. Best of luck with your pup, and be prepared to do everything you can to keep 'em immobilized for the ENTIRE healing period, and gradually work up the mobility a little a t a time- start by always walking with a leash, even just to go potty, and work in some physical therapy by manually moving the joint back and forth to stretch the ligaments back out.
