Re: Dog owners....one of my babies has a torn ACL...anyone experience this? F****k!
sigh

Anyone that knows me around here knows I'm a hardcore dog mommy.

To make a long story short. Gypsy, my border collie mix...was having snow shenanigans yesterday and came down bad on one of her back legs. She let out one little yelp and proceeded to remain 3 legged gimpy for the night. I gave her some buffered aspirin and cold compresses, yadda yadda.

Fast forward to today. She was still not walking on the affected leg so I took her to the vet. FUCKING TORN ACL. They are recommending surgery. Clearly I am going to get a second opinion with another family vet but shiiiiit.

It's not about the money, I would sell everything I own to care for my furry babies. I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if it's really the BEST option.

The vet she saw today is SUCH A DOUCHER that I'm not even sure if it's a partial or full tear. If it turns out to be partial, I was thinking I'd rest her and do some home therapy for a few weeks.

Anyone have experience in this arena? I know there are alot of animal lovers on the forum.

Thx guys... I'm seriously a wreck over this. Lost one of babies 2 years ago and I'm always a mess when something goes wrong ... :crying:

Aw, I'm so sorry. Poor Gypsy.
This happened to one of my dogs, a shepherd/husky mix when she was around 8 or so. It was a full tear, and she did have the surgery and it went well. The hardest part was the separation, they kept her overnight. She was an abused, late in life rescue, and really bonded to us, and didn't trust people. So we paid the vet tech $100 to stay with her overnight because they wouldn't let me stay there with her. I was afraid she would think we abandoned her. The only issue is the day we brought her home, she had a little problem with urinary incontinence, that she had the rest of her life. I always wondered if it was a side effect of the anesthesia, or maybe it was her age and would have happened anyway. She was a wonderful and sensitive dog.

I've also torn an ACL, it was very painful when it happened but not after a week or so. But I would fall without warning and I could feel the two bones hitting together, which was an eerie feeling. I had the surgery as well and walk normally. I also had 6 months of PT which the dog didn't need.

I was amazed that she wanted to run in a weeks time. I wasn't allowed to do that for 6 months.

They really do heal so much faster than us. That was years ago, and she is gone now. So, I imagine they are doing even less invasive surgeries now.

hf
My best wishes to you and Gypsy.

I forgot to mention, she will have to wear a cone around her neck to prevent her from reaching the wound. My dog hated that. And I had to keep her activity low for a while.

It was very hard to keep her from running and jumping, but I stayed with her alot, even slept on the floor next to her.

Dog meat,yummmm...yeah,sure bring 'em over i'll fix her up!

But honestly i think you should just find a different vet...i don't get people who go to the doctors or to an appointment, end up with a total fucktard treating them, and then they are unable to find someone better and end up going along with a shitty decision that they'll regret later.

YOU CAN DOOOO IT!!

There are 2 different vets in that practice, been with them for years. The entire time I've had these dogs. Anyway, I'm going for a follow up with another vet. I want an xray, not a pompous opinion.

Fucking bastards.

That's the spirit! ;)

Animals are one thing, but you'd be surprised how many times i would have almost had to live with a false diagnosis if i wouldn't had searched for answers myself.

I got a spinal disc herniation and the fucking doctor said it's scoliosis, can you believe that?

Every wrong position i'm in feels like Zeus was ramming down my spine with lightning, and they said "oh it can't be that bad"

WHAT THE FUCK? My nerve is stuck between 2 spinal discs and "it can't be that bad".If i wouldn't had pressed it and gotten an MRI it would have stayed that way cause the X-ray didn't show shit. Those times i just thought i'd demonstrate the poses to the doctor to show what kind of energy could be released into their skull after a painful stretch of my back.

I sure hope your dog gets allright,i'm a cat person myself, but if you take an animal, you better take damn good care of it no matter what species it is. hf

Aww, Opeth, that sucks :(

Our border collie did something similar, completely destroyed his cruciate ligament. It was horrible, he was a thre-legger too.

Well, the long and short of it was that at almost eleven, we almost didn't get the operation to replace it. But we just couldn't put him down, so some hefty $$, a few pins, and teflon ligaments later, he's a happy, healthy 16 year old who JUST finished his dinner :)

Never regret that decision :) Good luck with your baby.

Your response brought me to tears. :( It sounds like you and your doggie were a real blessing to eachother. It's so hard to lose them. Sooooo indescribably hard. flower

I am still trying to deal with the loss of one of ours, very tragic situation, coming up on 2 years next month.
Now, I just get so freaked out about everything now as far as they are concerned.

We have great communication but she just doesn't show pain or discomfort. Just wish she could tell me what SHE wants in this situation. She's 7 now and I feel she has many great years left, I just want the best for her. Naturally I worry about EVERYTHING that can go wrong, no matter what decision is made.

Thank you for responding, sincerely. hf

You know, it would be a friggen miracle here on GLP, if just one person who posted a pet thread started off with, hey my dog got sick / hurt, just got back from the vet, etc. etc. etc., Instead we comstantly have people who post threads thinking all the ac's and members here are veterinarians, who can magically fix their pets for them over forum talk.
Come on people FFS, take your pets to the goddamn vet already... thread about it after hes fixed.... Man !!!

she is about 6-7
I am not an expert though, we just couldn't afford surgery, and had to try other ways to heal.
We had a street cat we were feeding, he got hit by a car, and his back leg was hanging (lingament was torn)...Vet said to put him down or several thousand dollar surgery. We couldn't afford surgery, but didn't want to kill the guy...So we just kept feeding him....Several months later, he was only slightly limping, he was just fine.

Yeah, the money is an issue ... but really only a sacrificial one. My husband and I havent taken a trip together in 7 years. Finally planned a really nice cruise...which I will cancel to do this. Pretty much sucks but I feel as much love (if not MORE) for my dogs as any person or family in my life.

I know that things can heal. I have the ability to work with such things. I do alot with natural remedies, etc. I just want to feel confident I'm doing the right thing. I know it's a long recovery and I am just not sure it's necessary to put her through all that.

You should know a torn ligament isn't going to heal itself
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1043775

But she doesn't know for sure if it's torn. Also, it might not be obvious on an x-ray how bad the damage is if it's a partial tear. The vet might have to go in to find out.

Re: Dog owners....one of my babies has a torn ACL...anyone experience this? F****k!
had this happen to an English Bulldog before. Before you go forward, ask about WHICH type of surgery they are calling for- depending on extent of the tear and age/activity level of the dog, there are a couple of different options. I saw a previous poster mentioned the "pins and suture" method which is definitely the cheapest, and held up well for our very-active bully. Some of the other options get more invasive and $$- involving cutting off the top of the joint and turning it 180degrees so there is more bone support. Our vet is great and he actually had us go with "Stage 1," because if it fails, they can still go on to the other methods. Best of luck with your pup, and be prepared to do everything you can to keep 'em immobilized for the ENTIRE healing period, and gradually work up the mobility a little a t a time- start by always walking with a leash, even just to go potty, and work in some physical therapy by manually moving the joint back and forth to stretch the ligaments back out.

Dude, yeah, the age doesn't matter to me...I just want to do the best possible thing. I just do not like or particularly respect this vet. (2 in the practice, I got the dick today.) I will do the second opinion and if surgery is the BEST option for her, then that is exactly what I will do.

You warm my heart when you say your dog is 16. I would be most blessed to have all that time with my Gypsy. We lost FuChu a week after she turned 5, 3 days before my birthday, Feb 18, 2009. Horrible, horrible thing. I still get emotional ALOT because of that and it will be 2 years next month.

I have this immense love for my dogs, I cannot describe it. I've lost many close people in my life but it's just not the same. I don't do well with the animal stuff. I honestly have this mother/child bond with them and it's crazy.

IDK, just babbling. Stressed out...add cocktail

It'll be tricky, keeping them from moving it, but if you can keep this stuff applied as they heal (AND glucosamine and chondroitin supplements, as well as a good multi-vitamins soaked in water until it becomes brothy and then added to their food), it'll be much better on that ligament!!

Very sorry OP. There is no cure for torn ACL, only surgery will fix the problem, then your dog will be good as new. One of my Akitas suffered this at age 8, had surgery, lived on an active life until 14 & 1/2 years old. The surgery involves something akin to a strong elastic band replacing the ligament. Good luck, your dog will be fine after surgery.

Ok, I had a Rottie I spent 3k on surgery for a torn cruciate and then she tore the other, vet confirmed....this time, I didn't have the surgery done, crated her, limited her activity for a couple of months and ZERO problems with that leg after that. She was back to normal activity after about 3 months time.

The important thing is to keep her activity to very little...NO STAIRS, NO RUNNING, NO JUMPING ON FURNITURE! These are things you'd have to do anyway if she was going to have to have surgery...gauranteed 3 months, as little activity as possible. So..You may want to try that before taking the surgery plunge.

Also, not sure what kind of food you're feeding, but if you live near a Natural Pet Food store, I suggest you speak with them about a good high grade food and supplements to support joints and ligaments.

Good Luck!

I suggest finding a vet that specializes in TPLO surgery. Not all vets can fix a torn acl some will just try to patch it. (Quacks). Find a specialist and they will give you your options, but TPLO surgery is a permanent fix. Our pittie had it years ago and is still rompn like a puppie. Well worth the money. Just find someone who does this for a living. I can't stress this enough. Here is a link.

I still miss her every day. FFS.

Anyway...

I just do not feel comfortable with one of the vets in that office, otherwise they are FANTASTIC...
This is a just such big deal to me. Also, this is the vet that treated my baby after her accident and subsequently died while I transported her to an emergency hosptial.... sooooooo no warm fuzzies for this fucker!

The practice in general is EXCELLENT though... except for this particular vet not being good with humans. IDK.

Gypsy is coming across entirely fine, I'm the one that is freaking out, she's just laying at my feet all smiles.

LOL... fucking dogs. AND!..she has been on hardcore antibiotics for her bladder infection for a week now, so she's a bit tired. Otherwise, this new injury is not disturbing her much. IDK.

I will just take it day by day. It's really hard with how much I work though. I'm like a distraught mommy. No other way to describe it.

Thank you again for all of your kind words and help Tux. Really means alot. xoxo

Re: Dog owners....one of my babies has a torn ACL...anyone experience this? F****k!

Playing Frisbee is the number one cause of a torn acl in dogs.

TLPO surgery...definitely should be done by a specialist. However, I would like to state again...I would try to limit activity for a couple of months and see if it improves on it's own.

I used to show Dogs, specifically Rottweilers and Brussels Griffons and know many people who have had dogs with this issue. NOT ALL OF THEM NEED SURGERY! Depends on how much damage is there. Vets of course will not tell you that...but I know first hand that some do heal FINE!

A good vet will show you how much the joint moves when he flexes it. A dogs joint should have no side to side movement. It's an easy diagnosis when done by a qualified person. If torn it will not heal without surgery. Ask your vet for the name of a specialist. We took our dog over 100 miles to find someone who specialized in that type of injury.

Re: Dog owners....one of my babies has a torn ACL...anyone experience this? F****k!

Good Luck!

Ty! See, this is what I was thinking if it's a partial tear. Just keep her in check, do my holistic regime and what have you. I know the protocol and can reinforce it. I just feel damned if I do and damned if I dont, ya know? I don't want her to be slighted because of me 'doubting medicine'. I will see after the next vet and take it from there. I can care for her impeccably in the meantime. IT JUST SUCKS.

Lot's of glucosamine, anti inflams, etc.

:( always fucking something.

I hear ya, although to be quite honest, I've always found that a vet that is NOT good with humans is also not as good with animals. I think it's a lack of compassion, which might make for a great mechanic or technician, but does NOT make for an excellent healer.

I don't have any pics of Nikita on this machine, but I'll dig one up for you. I CAN show you a pic of my big beautiful boy taken yesterday, though:

That's Einstein. He's Mr. Personality, and a big love bug (emphasis on BIG... LOL) I'll send you one of his sister too, when I get a good one.

And I hear what you mean about the whole work thing, I'm lucky to work from home so that in a pinch, I can make time for whatever I need to, within reason. And you don't need to describe it to me, that feeling, because I'm just as protective of MY babies :)

And no need to thank me... you'd do the very same for me. And a big XO right back at'cha!

Wowwwww, he is GORGEOUS! What a beautiful boy! Are they mixed or pure bred? How old are they? Names? Feel free to PM if ya want...as I'm sure our doggie love may bore others, not that I give a flying *f*

If I ever get a dog that I do not *rescue*, I wish to own a Newfoundland. I just vibe with those cuties! I like my dogs big and playful AND SMART! All of my babies have been obscure mixes that I got from the shelter as pups or have come across abandoned crying. I have that whole 'save me thing' going on. So many are brought into this world already abandoned, it's hard for me to just go get one from a breeder when this is the case.

My history with animals has proven 'mutts' far superior to most fancy dogs!...at least in comparison to the other ridiculous dogs in my family. (My parents have chinese cresteds. I rest my point! lol!)

Please do send me pics of them when you get some (pm or whatever, or post here).

You've helped me through a really rough night and I cannot express my gratitude enough! Always good to bond with a fellow canine lover. You've made my night! : :snogging:

Re: Dog owners....one of my babies has a torn ACL...anyone experience this? F****k!
Of course, every injury is individual. So we can tell you all day about what did or did not work for our dog and it only helps if the circumstance is exactly the same.

when one goes, the other one often goes later. don't know why exactly, but I would suspect a goofy dog who doesn't get enough exercise and then just blows it out.

I would give the dog some time, first. Surgical intervention isn't always the best option, believe me. It sure didn't work out well for my sister's dog's torn acl. It'll make you feel like you've done everything you can, but there's a heck of a lot of checks on the side that says 'don't do it'.

so I'd do my darnedest to keep the dog quiet, get some rimadyl for inflamation. It may not be completely torn and would heal much better if it healed on its own.

I deal with vet stuff with horses all the time. (I have 14 equines). So I'm real familiar with making a judgement call. The vets have to do it all the time.

And then after all is healed (whether surgery or on its own) I'd start a steady work out regime for doggie. You know - 20 minutes of jogging after you've worked up to it. This is what we do with horses. Condition them.

Best of luck!!!
