Anonymous Coward User ID: 1230353 Australia 01/14/2011 08:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This USGS press release was the lead story on ABC local news @ 5pm. Quoting: JaneDoeX0XARkStorm: California’s other "Big One" Released: 1/14/2011 3:00:00 PM [link to www.usgs.gov] excerpt: "... scientists unveiled a hypothetical California scenario that describes a storm that could produce up to 10 feet of rain, cause extensive flooding (in many cases overwhelming the state’s flood-protection system) and result in more than $300 billion in damage." (the newscast said $1 trillion) The way it was presented, it sounded like they except this hypothetical situation to be a reality. Well..thats because they DO. |

The ARkStorm is essentially two historic storms (January 1969 and February 1986) put back to back in a scientifically plausible way." |

I guess what I meant to say it that while they used words like hypothetical, it came across as a warning of something that is imminent in the near future - like this year. They cited the 17" of rain in 3 days that fell in areas of Los Angeles last month as an example. |

User ID: 1221636 United States 01/15/2011 02:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I just remembered the lead in for the ABC news report on this new doom scenario: they called it "California's Perfect Storm." Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1227560Crazy...I read about it today, I must say I love the name of ArkStorm. I wonder if they will create an Ark for us Californians, that would be so cool! I live in Los Angeles and have noticed that each rain season we have had our clouds look wierd like they are too low I have always paid attention to the sky even as a small kid and I don't remember them being so low. |

Is it because of all the super storms across the world right now spewing chaos? Do they know these storms forming because we have entered a magnetic pole reversal? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 864188I'm guessing the scientific answer would have to do with the cycles for storms like this. The less scientific answer is that it's their subtle way of saying yes to the questions you pose! |

Maybe we'll be one of the first to try out the Green Arks! I agree with USGS I know Los Angeles wont be able to handle a massive storm, we can barely handle our seasonal rain which cause major pot holes some huge and our streets get flooded so quickly. |

User ID: 1176427 United States 01/15/2011 02:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When I was moving out to the Central Valley I found documents in the library for risk factors for things like quakes, flooding, liquefaction, etc. This sounds more or less like what was called the '500 year flood' a rare, but geologically recorded event where the central valley basically becomes a very shallow lake. While our property extends halfway into the river outback, we are about 85-100 feet above the river on average. We have a steep - nearly a cliff - hill at the back of the property. Considering the risks and looking at elevation maps, in order for water from the river to reach my door step the whole of Modesto would be under about 15 to 25 feet of water. Yet my home sits in an area that does get flooded about every 500 years. I can not imagine that much water flowing through the valley, it would completely wipe out Stockton, Sacramento, Modesto and all of the minor and tiny communities between.
