And what you say here is actually why I'm not totally sold on more gun legislation. Our government has proven time and time again how it can take advantage of our fear and enact incredibly scary policies. (can you say Patriot Act?) But this doesn't mean the dangers are to be ignored. It's something that needs to be discussed and considered. But carefully and not during a time like this (right after a congresswoman gets shot). Fear is worse than bullets right now when it comes to national integrity.

Slow down there, Turbo. You are comparing crime rates within the US between states that have strict laws versus states that have lax laws. You ever think that maybe those laws were made more strict because the gun crime was high there? If you want to compare gun crime world-wide, be my guest. I personally couldn't care less if Americans have guns or not, however I am very pleased that in Australia we have to get licenses to own a gun.
At least that way those that have a KNOWN history of violence or crime are unable to legally get them.
As was stated earlier, knives can also be used, but at least you can outrun a knife.
I must admit that I own a gun to kill snakes around my rural property, but otherwise would have no need for one.
I have noticed on this forum though that Americans tend to believe we have given up our freedoms by not being allowed to own guns. The opposite is true. I walk down the street never having a thought that I would ever be approached by someone with a gun. That for me is true freedom.
