Jumbotron At Tucson Memorial Instructed People To Applaud

The other day outgoing White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told us they were surprised by the applause at the pep rally memorial service in Tucson.

I will say that I read the speech several times and thought that there wouldn’t be a lot of applause if any. I think many of us thought that. But I think there was a celebration, again, of the lives of those who had been impacted. Not just at that grocery store but throughout the country. And I think that, if that is part of the healing process, then that’s a good thing.

That’s odd, since the Jumbotron instructed people to applaud.

I hate that. . .it's just like on the old gameshows: they light up a big sign that says "APPLESAUCE" and everyone claps on cue.

Like the guy mention in your link in the comments section, I have to agree with him. It's not instructing people to applaud... it's captioning for the hearing impaired and therefore says applause... not applaud.

Was the thing programmed beforehand to say 'applause' or is this some kind of magic applause recognition software at work.

You realize that live events still have closed captioning don't you? Someone just types it in as the speech goes along. They add applause to show that people are clapping... is this really that difficult to understand?
