You have to be retarded to believe this.

Never mind on second thought I can actually see how laymen with no biology knowledge would buy this.

OK, so PROVE him wrong.

first off, proving this bacteria is synthetic or not is not as easy as you may think, there are billions of bacteria out there, they are constatly evolving to break down "stuff" that humans produce, like plastics for exaple that has just happened recently. It's preety naive for this guy to believe that we have already collected all the bacteria that exist on earth and have decoded all their DNA "signiture" lol. So if there was an major oil spill in the gulf which is often exploited for oil and even leaks oil naturally, it's makes sense that bacteria that can break it down already exist, and that they would be unknown to scientists untill now, such bacteria exist everywhere on earth.

Secondly let's say this is a synthetic bacteria, first of all you could only know that it's synthetic if the creator included a water mark somwhere in the genome, that is if the watermark is still intact and hasn't mutated (since it happens to be in a irrelevant noncoding region that would readily mutate). You would also need to talk to the people that designed it and ask them what the watermark looks like.

when it comes to understanding the genome and genetic engeniering humans are preety infantyle, all Venter simply coppied and pasted the genome with little modifications (such as shortening some regions) nature is still most efficient at designing genes, all humans are doing do far is swaping them between species or breaking them to see how they work, intracellular signaling is too complex to create new pathways by ourselves (I know I deal with these problems every day in the lab)

and yes I do have access to a pcr machine and a sequencing core, but what he is asking is preety silly, prove to me that cats weren't genetically engeniered by aliens and placed on earth to watch over humans. Unless you know what to look for your can't prove or disprove this claim.

Lastly why are you so pissed? What if they are really genetically engeniered bacteria that are eating oil, do you want oil to polute the gulf? If anything nefarious I would say it's not genetically egeniered but instead selectively grown in a lab like they are trying to make algae that produce oil, or perhaps viruses to transmit oil breakdown genes to natural bacteria, I don't understand why that fightens you so much. Or how you make a leap from oil degrading gene to some sort of superhuman bacteria that kills billions of fish and birds nontheless.

But you know your probably going to ignore me like you ignored the other guy that tried to explain to you rationally that viruses do not "mutate" into bacteria and then bacteria into fungi, I don't know if that guy really said that but if he did, he should be stripped of his title of Doctor. Someone once told me that the first rule of GLP is not to let any evidence or rationalit explanation spoil a good conspiracy, I don't really know why I'm even explaining this to you perhaps I can naively hope to help you realize your claims are exagerated and you shouldn't worry, but I can't stop you from doing something you love, which is scarring yourself with silly doom that any person that knows biology can disprove.
