From tomorrow's research paper regarding synthetic genome releases and Horizontal Gene Transfer now occurring in the Gulf of Mexico:

Horizontal gene transfer includes the transfer of genes by infectious viruses (bacteriophages). It has been used by genetic engineers (i.e., Synthetic Genomics, Inc.) to make transgenic organisms. While natural viruses and bacteria respect species barriers, this barrage of artificial genetics made by synthetic biology engineers to eliminate the crude oil and gasses in the Gulf are designed to cross species barriers. This has created NEW viral and bacterial pathogens, and is responsible for the spreading of drug and antibiotic resistant viruses and bacterial outbreaks along the Gulf Coast.
