For sale, the house with a very strange hiss-tory: Desperate realtor slashes price on Idaho home infested with SNAKES
The agent trying to sell this five-bedroom house in Idaho has listed it for $66,000 less than its estimated market value - because it is infested with thousands of snakes.

They could just call a decent exterminator and leave the price the way it was...

Just get a few pet mongooses - that ought to take care of them.

I've had 3 baby garter snakes (the size of a large earthworm) in my house over the past year. They don't bother me. I just capture them in a glass and take them out to the garden.

I've also had a few scorpions. They do creep me out a bit...

sounds like a health issue and they should be totally exterminated before it is put up for sale

for $66 thousand they surely could get rid of them and lose less

They say the snakes are between the exterior siding and the exterior wall. A mongoose could not get in there. Now I think I understand the problem, and I don't see a reasonable solution either.

I had a friend who built a "camp" north of where we live. He built it over several years. It was in the woods. One spring he discovered a nest of 100's of rattlesnakes. He called in LSU to find out what he could do about it. They said nothing. Give it up. He walked away and never looked back.

dry ice in the walls and small chunks under the house into the snakes dens and then cement over the bottom of the house then for the backyard thin chicken wire like screen with the backyard topsoil over it allot of work but for a cheap house, then again the houses are cheap these days best to go with practicality

Garter snakes, the stinking bastards. And there's no way to get rid of them. Even if you burned the house to the ground the nest would still be there in the same location

Interesting; I had a problem with field mice. Encouraged circumstances for garter snakes which pretty well eliminated the mice.

Might have to take a second look at this situation.

THIS^^

The smell of one of these dens is god awful..

And we're not talking a few hundred, we're talking thousands of these bastards if it's the same house I'm thinking of.

There was a show about it some time back. They had even gotten their excrement and stench into the well water.

It must be horrible, but the good news is that they are "just" garter snakes, which are not too dangerous to humans.

Unfortunately the animals that eat the garter snake may not be a good solution, either, even if they could get into the den.

Animals that eat the Common Garter Snake include large fish(such as bass and catfish), bullfrogs, snapping turtles, milk snakes, hawks, skunks, foxes, and domestic cats.

I've got a garden pond of significant size which has Koi and goldfish planted. It is six foot deep so the fish make it through winter with the aid of an aerator.

The garter snakes were hanging around the pond and would take a goldfish from time to time up to four inches long. Bigger than any mouse. And the damned mice were getting down into a pit where there was a pump to pressurize water from a remote spring. At first I was killing the snakes so they wouldn't take goldfish, but when I stopped killing the snakes the mice disappeared.

It's a tradeoff. But I guess now I'll start cutting the grass shorter and more frequently and killing more of the snakes.

But, yes; they will take mice.

thank you for pointing that out - with that many snakes there has to be a huge source of food for them - eliminate source & you eliminated the snakes

Thank God I live a country where seeing a snake is a rarity, though I have seen a couple over the years and expect that they exist closer than I think.

The USA seems to be very much like Australia when it comes to horrifying critters.

Is there anywhere reasonable to live in the USA where you don't get snakes (poisonous or otherwise), skunks, deadly spiders, cockroaches and palmetto bugs (scream) et al?

I suppose some of the colder norther states have less of a problem.

There's a market for rattlesnakes. If you or your friend can't handle rattlers (and I don't blame you), find a snake person who can...

I know a guy who personally watched for exactly that kind of thing. Knowing where a den is proves valuable for people who deal in that market.

While the north doesn't have palmetto bugs, chiggers, cockroaches, and bad snakes, in general they have mosquitoes and ticks.

One of the well kept secrets is the north end of the great basin. Bozeman Montana to east of Butte and east of the continental divide.
