(OP) User ID: 933740 United States 01/28/2011 02:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A glimpse of the state of stem cell research: "The use of stem cells to repair or replace damaged brain tissue is a new and exciting avenue of research. A neural stem cell is a special kind of cell that can multiply and give rise to other more specialized cell types. These cells are found in adult neural tissue and normally develop into several different cell types found within the central nervous system. NINDS researchers are investigating the ability of stem cells to develop into neurotransmitter-producing neurons, specifically dopamine-producing cells." [link to www.ninds.nih.gov] This is just the information the NIH has released into the public domain. Published papers tell a slightly different story: "Transplanted Neural Stem Cells Survive, Differentiate, and Improve Neurological Motor Function after Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury" [link to journals.lww.com] It's clear neural stem cells can be used to knit parts of a damaged brain back together and restore function. Again, this is only what's been released to the public domain. The short version of this is the researchers gave mice brain damage, from blunt force and from mock surgeries, to assess the ability of neural stem cells to repair the damage. Mice given human kidney stem cells as a "control" showed less improvement. Aside from the very weird choice of human kidney stem cells as a "control", this shows stem cells perform well to repair brain tissue. As for why human kidney stem cells were used as a "control", it would seem this was a separate experiment in itself. The results of that experiment appear to be unpublished. I wonder what they learned by injecting human embryo kidney cells into mice brains. :| It didn't increase their motor function. What DID it do? Last Edited by Plautus on 01/28/2011 02:21 PM |

She is also a strong supporter of abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research." [link to washingtonexaminer.com] Is this operation part of a quid pro quo for her participation in getting the taxpayers to fund it all? These people have bottomless pockets. Right now it's just the "neuronauts" that get to go on this ride. Some day it will be all the rulers, their clones will be ruling us for the next million years. The coupling of abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research is an obvious choice. Where else are you going to get all those human embryo stem cells if not from human embryos? |

Allows federal funding for research that utilizes human embryonic stem cells, regardless of the date on which the stem cells were derived from a human embryo, provided such embryos: 1. have been donated from in vitro fertilization clinics; 2. were created for the purposes of fertility treatment; 3. were in excess of the needs of the individuals seeking such treatment and would otherwise be discarded; and 4. were donated by such individuals with written informed consent and without any financial or other inducements." This fits the profile of somebody who wants to clone themselves, use some of the embryos as stem cell treatments and have their brain transplanted into a young clone. |

"The federal government provides the lion’s share of funding for stem cell research—79.4 percent through 2007—and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The federal government will even spend more specifically on embryonic stem cell research than the states, meaning that unless we update our stem cell policy, at least 55 percent of the funding currently designated for embryonic stem cell research through 2018 will go to research on outdated stem cell lines." |

"'Medical miracles do not happen simply by accident,' Obama said Monday. [link to www.csmonitor.com] "For all the national angst it generates, hESC research remains a surprisingly small part of stem-cell research. Over the past five years, it has received $530 million in federal funding, only about 3.5 percent of total stem-cell dollars. Where does the rest of the money go? Half of all private funding and 9 of 10 federal dollars go to stem cells culled from adults, bone marrow, umbilical cords, or animals." This "ban" doesn't really affect privately funded research at all. Releasing federal funding dollars to certain institutions is a way for them to control the development of the technology and have the taxpayers foot the bill, getting none of the benefits. It's doled out in a very careful fashion and then controlled strictly throughout the research. Last Edited by Plautus on 01/28/2011 03:45 PM |

The Starr Foundation is providing $50 million over three years for human embryonic stem-cell research at three New York City medical institutions, including the Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center. Weill Cornell Medical College, also in New York City, has established the Ansary Center for Stem Cell Therapeutics with a $15 million grant from philanthropists Shahla and Hushang Ansary. In California, UCLA has established an Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Medicine with $20 million in funding over the next five years. Stanford University created the Institute for Cancer/Stem Cell Biology and Medicine, with a goal of $120 million in funding. An anonymous donor gave Johns Hopkins University a $58.5 million gift to launch an Institute for Cell Engineering. The University of Minnesota has set up a Stem Cell Institute with a $15 million capital grant. A grateful patient pledged $25 million over the next 10 years to finance stem-cell research at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston." The "private" stem cell research amounts to about 4 billion dollars. Half of which is embryonic stem cell research. There's no shortage of embryonic stem cell research going on, despite federal funding "bans". Select companies with the best performance are no doubt chosen for the next rounds of federal funding, which are relatively small but very surgically applied.
