'The speech therapist was saying to me that a few days ago she was having to get Gabby to speak some more,' astronaut Mark Kelly told NBC News.

This is the half of the brain that (if reports are to be believed) was almost certainly more or less obliterated by the passage of a medium caliber low velocity bullet passing in and out through the thickest bones of the skull. Even if Giffords is left-handed it's still quite likely her speech centers (and other important functions) are on the left side of her brain.
