Sharapova finds dead spot - check out the video!!! What happened is that the stifling temperatures in Melbourne caused a heat bubble filled with air to form under the surface of the court. It's the same concept that causes crust bubbles to develop on edges of pizza slices. As the Mirror reported, workers came out and drilled two small holes in the court, which let out the air. Order, and gravity, was restored. |

I think the video with the ref trying to bounce the ball and it just laying there is hilarious!!! Has anybody ever seen something like this? It is interesting how something like this can happen...and at the Australian Open too...lol. |

They either didn't do good prep work on the surface and the coating didn't stick (most likely) or the material wasn't tested enough in extended exposure to high temp. |

It made me laugh....as Sharapova said, it looked as if somebody put down velcro, lol. |

I have never seen anything like this before - watch the video how the ref tests that spot...lol. Quoting: Babsi[link to sports.yahoo.com] "The ball doesn't bounce at all! It's completely absorbed by the court. There's no upward movement at all. I just tried dropping a tennis ball on a soft pillow and there was at least a little. That one simply died, like it was caught by one of those velcro paddles you see people playing with on the beach. Sharapova finds dead spot - check out the video!!! Wow that is majorly wierd. The ball should have at least rolled to one side or another after it hit, but nothing. It was like it just got stuck there instantly. "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787 |

Sharapova finds dead spot - check out the video!!! The "heat bubble" theory would have been detectable by putting one's foot on it, or at most poking the area in question with a finger. If it's massive enough to prevent a ball designed to bounce from bouncing, it's huge enough to have been detectable visually, and certainly manually Anyone recall the ball at the basketball game a few weeks ago that just hung on the rim without moving for seconds? Little glitches in the matrix, presaging broader/wilder ones. Good find, OP! |
