I was a naive 18 yr old girl, who just so happen to be sat next to a man in his mid to late 20s, an ex-male prostitute with AIDS on his way home to his family on Kansas, presumably because he was dying. We became fast friends during the 8 hour journey. He has charisma and a fifth of whiskey. I had the innocent, listening ears of an older teenage girl. Before long, he was drunk and resting his head on my shoulder. I was heavily buzzed, trying to take in his intense life story that he had just shared with me. When I look back on this experience, 19 years ago, I think how blessed I was not only to catch one of the last train rides of our local station, but to meet a man who needed someone at that moment as much as I needed someone, and although I didn't quite have that in mind, I did see how simply listening and being kind to this poor soul, someone who had lived on the streets and sold his body and was now reconciling with his own death, could appreciate so much the kindness and innocence of one caring soul. Taught me a lot. So yeah, take a train ride, it just might change who you are!! |
