108-3 girls basketball rout raises questions

Seriously? What's the point in calling the game unless everybody has someplace else they need to be? Do you think the losing team is gonna feel better getting waxed 75-3 vs 108-3? Not. Do you think the losing team is gonna feel better about their skills if the game gets called? Not. All this PC stuff in kids sports is bullshit and burns me up. I played sports in Jr. High and High School and this stuff never happened. We were good too!!

That blog is priceless! When you get a chance, read some of the other entries. I literally LOL'd when I first found it.

Sports for kids that are ORGANIZED BY ADULTS need to stop.

Let kids alone. Let them organize their own pickup games with their own rules.

If I were a coach for either of the teams in that blowout, I'd resolve the situation simply by doing what we would do in a pickup game.

After the score got to be 40-0 or so, it would be pretty obvious one team was very outmatched.


At that point, I would have stopped the game and awarded the leading team the victory. Then I would have had half the players on the winning team trade places with half the players on the losing team. Swap uniform tops and everything.

Now you have two somewhat more BALANCED teams. Now play a casual game for two quarters.


This is what we did in schoolyards. We would choose up sides but if one team was clearly kicking the other teams butts, after a while we would just adjust the teams by swapping a player or two to make for a more competitive game.

By whom? I may have missed it, but I don't see who said it was unsportsmanlike IN THIS INSTANCE. Odd that nowhere are we told that a parent or someone said this. No coach is quoted complaining and the one losing student did not gripe.

The winning coach mentioned that he did not have enough players to pull all the starters.

That is one way a blow out can be handled shittily. When you cannot lose a game, that is a perfect time to give your bench a chance to get real play time and learn and this will probably slow down the blow out.

I do think teams can be pressed to crush opponents, but it doesn't sound like this happened here, given the situation. And I wonder where the controversy is coming from.

People here are using this article as an example of the problems of liberalism.

But where in this game or in that article is the liberal? Who complained?

It really sucks sometimes having little kids right now. Ours are 5 and 7 years old. My husband and I are the "tough" parents, if they lie, cheat, or hit they get punished. The punishment varies with what they did and their attitude. That blog "the best parent ever" pisses me off; it is the whole touchy feely, never tell your child you're disappointed in them because of their actions, never punish your child, the whole positive reinforcement, ignore the bad action by explaining why they're bad actions.

I tell our kids I love them more than all the blades of grass all over the earth, more than all the snowflakes that fall BUT when they do something wrong, we do explain why it is wrong and they are punished. I explain I love them, but I don't like their actions.

If they do something good, they are rewarded. But to never punish a child, only do positive reinforcement....grrrrrr...my two oldest nephews were raised by my EX sister-in-law that way...she insisted that they were never told "no", only redirect them, never punish in any form any negative behavior. I still think that the oldest one will one day surpass Jeffrey Dahmer/Charles Manson/Ted Bundy (insert name of whomever you think had no conscious). Even from 2 y/o up to 9 y/o he was an uncontrollable, evil little conniving brat. Now at 22 y/o he hides it better but there is absolutely no light in his eyes. The whole PC thing is most likely to break down the family unit and parental authority, empowering children to make the rules (oops, yes that was another thing my ex SIL did) instead of the parents.

You bring up a good point. The parents of the losing team have an opportunity to teach. Seems like everybody is a victim in this society. I agree this PC is bad and has gone too far in my book.

Unless there's someone that can kick the turd farther... That would just be unsportsmanlike. Everyones the best turd kicker! Everyone gets a trophy!

Hey FatalWishes I got to thinking about this thread while I was out chopping wood...you know who would be a real winner, the Kid who managed to score the basket to get the other team finally on the board, what was it...like the fourth quarter?...now that kid never gave up!...awesome post 5 stars cause nobody can stop me!

This is exactly what is being lost out when you stop games early and nonsense. Even in a losing effort there can sometimes be a silver lining, in never quitting and playing hard to the end.

I particularly hate it in baseball and softball more than the others, because once the score reaches a certain limit, the game flat out ends. And being that this sport is unique being untimed, you rob the losing team of a chance to comeback or at the very least make the score a bit more respectable and give them something to build on for the next game.

Further, in a sense you also even rob the winning team since they don't get the chance to really play as much as they should with the garbage time as it were, so as such it can hurt them in tighter games. Less experience for their pitching for example means a greater chance they may falter in a big situation when they're needed badly. The same could be said of lesser used hitters as well.

So everyone loses in that aspect.

Yeah you know....even I didn't think about that person that scored on the other team. What an interesting observation.

Amazing nobody had any hard feelings, imagine that.....we've fallen a long ways in 54 years.

Things were certainly different back then. It's cool they met 40 years later. These days those players would be seeing a shrink after a rout like that.

OK. I follwed the link and got lots of hits for what seemed like discussions sites. People on the internet will barely read links and say whatever. I am still trying to get at who in the article complained. The other coach didn't seem to. I didn't see any parents complaining. I see nowhere where IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE someone said the team should have done something else.

If I was coaching a team and they were slaughtering another team, of course I would bring in subs. I might also try tricky plays or mix up positions - if I thought these experiences might be valuable for my team.

The winning coach specifically addressed the sub issue.

The controversy seems hallucinated, here with the idea of attacking liberals.

in the first hit? Now I have watched it. I notice again that not a single person is named. Someone is complaining somewhere. But it doesn't seem to be the other school, its coach or players or parents of the players. There is this vague 'they'. Who is this they? The TV people did not say it was unsportsmanlike - despite being members of 'the liberal media.' Is there any indication that anyone actually knew the situation in question in this instance and complained about it? And were these people 'liberals'? It still smacks of a made up controversy since not a single person is quoted or on video anywhere. I mean people will get on camera or get quoted on any issue.

In some instances a blow out could be unsportsmanlike, but here, naah. If you have a seven footer in junior high school and you are ahead 50 points in the fourth quarter and no one on the other team can stop him and you do not put in your back up center, that's fucked up. If you play a very rough physical game against another team when you are already crushing them - basketball that is - that's unsportsmanlike. There is no need to put injuries on the table if you cannot lose. Here they played well and kept playing well.

The video did mention the losing coach did accept the apology. Why would he accept it if there was no complaint?

1) hippies are not liberals. Liberals all support the system, work, clean clothes, rent, ownership, conspicious consumption and the list goes on and on.
2) liberals love competition. There are just as many ex jock congressmen from the left side of the fence as from the right.
Liberals are not calling for the end of college football or any other ludicrous misallocation of interest and funding. They are out there cheering for their alma mater and screaming to get losing coaches fired just like your beloved conservatives.

Sure, many hippies were against competition. Are we now afraid of whatever small cliques of aging hippies and young imitators there are out there?

I mean, if you are going to feel victimized and predict your demise, at least pick an victimizer with some clout.
