Re: Cosmoline in new rifles
You can remove it super easy with just plain old Boiling Water. I use it all the time.

Ok....

Just boil some water and put it in the tub or what?

Hey
Buddy,
not sure if anyone has mentioned this, I didnt look at the replies, but take a roasting pan, fill it with near boiling water, then add 3/4 bottle of simple green. Drop your small parts in the water, You'll see the cosmoline float to the surface, it's orange. Then take a toothbrush and scrub it off the rest of the metal parts. If you have a wooden stock, there are a couple of ways to get it off. One is by putting it in a black trashbag out in the sun and go out nd scrub it off once an hour until it's all gone. Another way is to just scrub it with the simle green mixture. Another is to put it in a mixture of bleach and vinegar. Finlly, you can use a heat gun on very low heat. Good luck.

Just FYI

The synthetic stock AK for 349.00 Comes with a TAPCO NO SLAP G-2 TRIGGER.

This is the TIGHTEST best made non Milled AK I have ever bought.

I'm thinking about getting second one. I'm telling you, this thing is bad ass. Even the dust cover is tight. No rattles, loose parts and the trigger is awesome.

ITEM # ROM-AK MV-BPS....$379.95........$349.95

If you ever wanted a really well built decent AK for cheap this is it.

Yea, i have the same one. Bad ass tight gun. I've put 2000+ rounds through it with no problems, mags are tight, but not too tight, front sight is perfectly alligned. Love the tapco trigger.

Yeah the mags are really tight. Tapco synthetic mags will barely go in there. I had to shave em down a bit. Thats good though, I'd rather have too tight at first than loose.

Re: Cosmoline in new rifles
Acetone or mineral spirits. will not harm the gun at all, oil after its clean.

Better than anything.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 692708

Ditto this one cosmoline is a hydrocarbon/parafin based preservative brake cleaner is 1.1.1. or trychloreethane nasty shit to say the least and will leave no petroleum film on the weapon. Use Toluene or turpentine and them swab liberally with a good grade of either light 10wt.motor oil or sewing machine (fish)oil which is much lighter.

Yeah brake cleaner is pretty harsh but I like it because it does not leave residue and I oil afterwards.

Re: Cosmoline in new rifles
if you can remove the barrel and upper reciever from the stock, take all of the metal parts and put them on a large cookie sheet (or make a tin foil tray) put in the oven on on 200 degrees for about 20 min. Remove and wipe all parts with a rag to remove all excess cosmoline - the heat will actually cause most of it to melt and run out of the cracks and crevices. Repeat 2-3 times then clean using mineral spirits. I bought an old surplus Mauser that was caked in cosmoline and this is how I cleaned it up - it works pretty good.

Re: Cosmoline in new rifles
There is no easy way....You will laugh, but the "easiest" way to do a batch is to strip 'em and boil 'em in a large vat of water...The stuff just runs out....Leave 'em in long enough to remove it all and the metal heats up enough so that the heat evaporates the water..a little fluff and buff and you're good to go. Let the vat cool down and you can save the cosmoline that hardens on top for another long term storage project....

The stocks are harder...Wrap 'em in an old sheet, put that in a black plastic bag, leave that on your dashboard in the sun until they quit oozing sludge...

It sounds like a lot of work but it is a thorough method that keeps ya from havin' to do it over and over and over..

Make sure that you clean the firing pin on an SKS and the firing pin channel completely..You should be able to hear the pin rattle back and forth if you shake it (unless an aftermarket pin spring was added)..Cosmoline can make the pin stick and that could lead to an outta control slamfire event.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1019802

I don't have a large vat to boil in or I'd do that. I've heard of some people stripping em down and putting them in a bathtub and giving them baths....

Go buy one of those big metal trash cans like oscar the grouch uses. Relatively cheap and a good way to heat the water and dunk your guns. I'd even throw in a little DAWN soap. Then rinse and dry immediately. Build a fire under it.

Re: Cosmoline in new rifles
I just tried using gasoline.

I've also tried using Ballistol a gun cleaner (warning can only find online maybe at gunshows never seen in stores. Also it smells like vomit)

Really now I just use Frog Lube CLP it smells minty no more bullshit vomit smelling ballistol. Also you can eat the stuff not like you would want to but you can eat the frog lube. It works DAMN GOOD too. It works so good it's like having a polish job done but all you did was lube it up hah. The performance is so damn better after using it.

As for cosmoline I'm not sure how froglube would do with that.

I've removed cosmoline from a Mosin Nagant and a AK47 bayonet and just used ballistol mixed with water or gasoline on it.

Sorry that probably didn't help any. Just be glad you are being smart and cleaning it off BEFORE you shoot it...

I might try that on the next one.

Good news is I got it all clean with a can of brake cleaner and it fires flawlessly.

I may have to buy a second one. That thing is really well built for 350.00
