As a Texan I'm getting perturbed by the constant use of TX and it related to large doom, How about Manitoba sized or Alaskan sized, sheerly so it can be California sized.

In Australia, we use "as big as Texas" to mean something which is pretty big, but not all that big really. Does that make you feel better?

We use Texas as a reference becasuse TX can fit in a circle nicely - the shape of these systems.

this sheer map is making me think it will keep tracking West and not so much to the SW now ?
What do you think OP?
Possibly Mackay will be spared the full force of the storm?

With the ridge to the South it should go WSW on the bee-line. That area is in deep doo -

I live in brisbane..its gonna be funny watching all those houses and boats and bodies floating past again to put a fresh coat of SLUDGE DOOM on the bottom of the bay totally wiping out what was left of the rather pathetic fishing hereabouts of late.

OK..aye I agree...
There looks like a lot of convection in the East quadrant and not much of an eye at present but the amount of precipitation in something this big will really case a lot of damage for 100's of kms either side of landfall.. I am no where near it but I am a bit concerned for those near there

Thanks for your thread on this

Shit! Could be the biggest cyclone to ever hit Queensland and they're expecting up to a metre of rain in some areas, a metre!!! This is according to Anna Bligh in the presser.

Re: Major Tropical Cyclone Yasi is larger than Texas and will hit Queensland by mid week
TROPICAL CYCLONE (TC) 11P, LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 1100 NM EAST OF CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA, HAS TRACKED WESTWARD AT 16 KNOTS OVER THE PAST SIX HOURS.
ANIMATED MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE IMAGERY DEPICTS A
RAPIDLY CONSOLIDATING SYSTEM WITH TIGHTLY-CURVED BANDING WRAPPING INTO A WELL-DEFINED LOW-LEVEL CIRCULATION CENTER. ANIMATED WATER VAPOR IMAGERY DEPICTS EXCELLENT RADIAL OUTFLOW. THE CURRENT INTENSITY IS BASED ON DVORAK ESTIMATES OF 65 KNOTS FROM KNES AND PGTW. TC 11P IS TRACKING ALONG THE NORTHERN PERIPHERY OF A DEEP SUBTROPICAL RIDGE (STR) POSITIONED TO THE SOUTH. THE SYSTEM IS
EXPECTED TO TRACK WEST-SOUTHWESTWARD THROUGH TAU 72.
THE STR IS EXPECTED TO MAINTAIN THROUGH THE PERIOD BUT WILL SHIFT EAST AND RE-ORIENT AS A MIDLATITUDE SHORTWAVE TROUGH DEEPENS OVER CENTRAL AUSTRALIA AFTER TAU 72. THIS WILL ALLOW THE SYSTEM TO TURN SOUTHWESTWARD AFTER MAKING LANDFALL NEAR TAU 72. THE AVAILABLE MODEL GUIDANCE IS IN EXCEPTIONALLY CLOSE AGREEMENT THROUGH TAU 120, THEREFORE, THERE IS GOOD CONFIDENCE IN THE FORECAST TRACK, WHICH IS
BASED LARGELY ON THE MODEL CONSENSUS. TC 11P HAS RAPIDLY INTENSIFIED OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS, INCREASING FROM 35 TO 65 KNOTS, AND IS EXPECTED TO INTENSIFY AT A 20-30 KNOT RATE PER DAY THROUGH TAU 48, PEAKING AT 115 KNOTS NEAR TAU 48. TC 11P IS FORECAST TO MAKE LANDFALL AS A 100+ KNOT, LARGE SYSTEM. TC 11P SHOULD DISSIPATE OVER LAND BY TAU 96. MAXIMUM SIGNIFICANT WAVE HEIGHT AT 310000Z IS 18
FEET.
