Possible hazardous material removed from Coventry home
COVENTRY — The Summit County Sheriff’s Office closed off the 2600 block of South Main Street Jan. 25 for several hours while the FBI investigated a tip about a hazardous substance at a home.
FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson stated a tip came in to local law enforcement Jan. 24 at about 4 p.m. about the material, and the Cleveland FBI office responded with a specialized team from Pittsburgh and Quantico, Va.
“We called in a specialized team to play it safe,” he said.
In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, fire departments from Coventry, Green, New Franklin, Lakemore and Springfield responded and waited while federal agents removed the substance.
“We did find a substance that was packaged and transported it to a lab in Maryland for testing,” said Wilson. “We won’t know for a couple of days what this substance is, but if it is what is suspected, it would be very hazardous to humans.”Wilson would not identify the substance or state who called in the tip.
He said the home had been in foreclosure and officials have talked with everyone who has lived at the residence in the recent past.
“We will take a look at the results of the test and go from there as to charges,” he said.
Coventry Fire Chief David Calderone added the home was cleared and released to the occupants. Calderone and Wilson would not indicate who owns the home now or who currently is living in the home.
“This is a criminal investigation,” he said. “The incident was pursued with proper due caution after receiving enough information.”
Calderone also stated that county, local and federal officials worked together to “get the job done well.”
