Re: Oh lordy, here comes the ice...
...

I'm in Kettering and there is a really thin layer of ice out there but it has stopped. I guess I've never been though and ice storm so I don't know what to expect. During the wind storm we lost power for 9 days and it was rough, but at least the weather was really nice. I do worry the power will go out and I have a 3 year old, so I'm not sure what I'd do.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1251344

I know. We never prepare for anything before. But we have two kids and that changes things.
Biggest thing is heat. We have a gas fireplace that we never use, so we'll just have to turn that on an live in that room. We stocked up on food today, so we're fine there. I know we'll be fine, but there are a lot of people who aren't ready.

I think DP&L will be on the ball. They had no warning for the wind storm. This time they've had time to get ready, so hopefully they'll get things fixed fast if anything happens.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1009104

I sure hope we don't lose power. We have electric everything and no fireplace. I have food stocked up but really do worry about not having heat. I'm just hoping since all the trees were tore up after the wind storm and we have new power poles/lines in our area that may help. Don't know but I did hear DP&L has crews from TN on stand by for help. Any ideas on how to keep warm with electric everything???
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1251344

I think just lots of clothes and blankets. And probably cover your doors and windows with blankets so you don't lose as much heat. My parents' furnace kicked the bucket in the winter and my mom told me the house stayed around 55 degrees. So, it's not going to be like deathly cold in the house...just very uncomfortable. So I'd probably just cover windows and doors, maybe close up a room and stay in there. Get some candles. If you can get out in the morning, pick up a hurricane lamp. Is there a Kmart around there anywhere? My mom was at the one in Englewood today and they had them for $5. They actually get pretty hot. I guess a few flames won't do that much, but I'd think they'd give off some heat and help. Just be super careful.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1009104

Those are good ideas. I just think with a 3 year old, staying in one room might not work, lol. I was worried about it getting like 20 degrees in here, do your parent's live in a brick house? We have siding and it's always so drafty is my concern. I don't know what local station you listen to, but Jamie Simpson on chan 7 has said a few times, power outages could be prolonged. I'm not sure what is up with that, but after the wind storm I'm a bit freaked out. It looks like you guys are supposed to get it worse than us though. Good luck!

Oh, I know! Mine are 4 and 5! My parents house has siding. Just a ranch. They don't really get a lot of wind, though. Our house is brick, but we get a ton of wind. And our windows are 70 years old. We do have storm windows, so that's good.

I totally forgot to turn the news on! Ok..I just turned on 7. That's what I was reading earlier today...prolonged power outages. They're already closing/delaying a lot of schools.

I'm in the very bottom left of the Miami County box. So I'm right at the bottom edge of the bad stuff. It will probably hit or miss for me.

Oh great...he just said catastrophic.

Lots of closings already, if you look at the radar, we are getting a few breaks in it, but it's pretty solid your way. I'm wondering if it warms up a bit and rains, will that help us a bit? This is going to be a long one for sure. Just went outside, and it's doing nothing here. Jamie just said "catastrophic" event? The radar doesn't look too bad where I am though. Ahh, confused.

That's the thing. I was looking at radar stuff online and I don't get it. It looks like it's almost through and nothing behind it. Maybe I just don't know what I'm looking at.

He was talking like it will melt and refreeze. Probably won't change much.

I think you'll be ok down there. I-70 is really a cut off line. It's crazy, but the weather north of 70 is always completely different than south of it. And from what he was saying, we're getting it a lot worse up here. He said power outages would be up this way.

Well, Pea Vine, I sure hope you stay safe. If you're getting ice, you soon may not have electricity to read your thread.

Ice, snow, and wind headed for NW Ohio. Things might not be too much different here. Just more hassle with animal care. I live very primitively. It'll be a good day for baking.

You guys all stay safe and don't forget to fill some containers with water to flush the toilet, wash dishes, etc. Remember to check on your neighbors. Wouldn't want anyone to sit and quietly freeze. hf

Kinda makes it wish you had one of those polluting, dirty wood stoves now doesn't it?
If it came down to polluting and keeping my family warm i would chose a wood stove over death in a heart beat.
So take that and chew on it for awhile all you bleeding heart environmentalists, if the power is out for a long time you can explain to your freezing family how you just couldn't go out and buy a wood stove to keep them warm because you might get some ashes on the ground or someone might breath in the wood smoke.

I know, I'm not seeing much behind all this either. Trying to figure out how this is going to last until Wednesday night? You are right about the 70 line, it's always night and day between us. And it always follows it perfectly! Well, I hope you don't lose power and we just get a day or two of hanging around inside. Still, why say "catastropic"? I've turned this into a local news thread..........I'm sorry.....lol!

I've got a wood stove, but it's not polluting...as far as wood stoves go. It's a Lopi Liberty, one of the best rated for emissions. Can't even see smoke outside, and never inside. Hard to get warm with any other heat once you've used wood.

Woodstoves are actually carbon-neutral, that wood you're burning was once a tree that sucked up all that carbon outta the atmosphere. Its like getting married and having two kids. You are not contributing to overpopulation, merely keeping it at the status quo(ie making your replacements)

BTW my vermont castings defiant is cranking and keeping the house at 70, gotta love them woodstoves.

I've got an old cast iron pot bellied stove in my workshop out back, it weighs about 400 pounds and is about 5 feet high. Has "Taylor Iron Works - US Army" stamped on it. When that thing gets crankin it will run you out of there (a 30'x30' shop).
I bought it at an auction 20 years ago for a hundred dollars.

Did it get bad down your way? My husband works downtown and his work closed, so I was wondering how bad it was down there.

All you wimps make me laugh. It was close to -20 F here last night. Some areas reported -30.

My tires tend to go flat when it gets -20 and I hate adding air at that temp.
