Can someone explain the whole left/right paradigm to me?

It seems liberals hate institutions, conservatives love them.

Liberals hate responsibility, conservatives expect it.

Liberals have nothing to do with liberty, and conservatives have nothing to do with conservation.

Now, I know most people fall into the gray area in between, but what exactly defines the whole left/right thing?
