Thank you for the great video. In Calgary, the dried basil leaves are pricey and the supply in the store is not as much as before. I noticed because I try to stock up on spices and other things. |

Also, consider once inflation hits and food shortages take hold, then consider how much you will be able to make selling food. |

Hey there OP. I have noticed a few of your threads here, and have become interested in perhaps doing something similar in my basement. I'm sure you have mentioned it in the other threads, but I was wondering what types of lights those are that you are using. Also their price range and where I might find them. Thanks. |

Not to be a spoiler or anything, but how can you sell to locals, such as restaurants and grocery store, with obtaining some sort of permit from the county? Not that I would want to, but how is this done without them closing you down? |

THIS WAS A MINOR ARTFORM THAT IN SMALL COUNCIL FLAT GARDENS AND OTHER ENCLOSED URBAN BACKLOTS COULD BE BROUGHT BACK SO INNER CITY PEOPLE COULD HARVEST FRUIT [link to www.google.com] HERE'S ANOTHER MICROFARMER [link to www.youtube.com] WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE OP'S VIDEO IS HE SHOWS YOU HOW TO DO THIS INDOORS WITH GROWLIGHTS, PERHAPS IN A BASEMENT OR SPARE BEDROOM WHICH IS GREAT FOR FOLKS WITH LIMITED YARD OR BALCONY SPACE OR LESS THAN IDEAL GROWING CONDITIONS (((HUG TO THE OP))) |

I spent the last 12 months eating a SAD diet that is very high in restaurant food and take out food for a specific purpose. I gained a tremendous amount of weight intentionally as I wanted my body to represent someone who is on the standard american diet. Here is why: I am producing a documentary film using myself as an example. I needed to be overweight and have high cholesterol to show a staring point for a 100% RAW Vegan diet. I am working with a MD who ]will be monitoring all the blood work that includes any changes in calcium, iron, b vitamins, cholesterol, blood pressure etc. I already know what the outcome is going to be, but to teach others and expose the real issues of why North America and much of the world is obese and sick with disease, they will need to see a living example of change. For my line of work I produce documentaries that inspire and teach others. Last Edited by mah127 on 02/16/2011 09:00 PM |

I'm sure you have mentioned it in the other threads, but I was wondering what types of lights those are that you are using. Also their price range and where I might find them. Thanks. They are 90watt LED Ufo lights. Be careful as all are not made the same and I got burned on ebay with cheap lights that did not grow plants very well. A good led ufo light will run about 180 to 220.00 and will last about 10 years running for 16 hours a day. I never tried these lights, but I have heard good reviews: Gothamhydroponics 180watt ufo lights 209.00. To be sure I would only buy one and try it to make sure it is a legit led grow light. There are literally 1000's of companies in China making them and some of them are brutal and some are excellent. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1268005Here is a real example of what to expect for costs: It costs 7 cents a day, $2.20 per month or 26.40 to run one 90watt LED light at 16 hours a day. One light will grow 20 heads of greens over 4 to 6 weeks. This includes kale, chard, and leaf lettuce. Bib lettuce or heads of lettuce can take 6-8 weeks. If you grew the 4-week cycle, 20 heads of greens would cost you $2.20 in electricity, $3.00 for rock wool, and 24 cents in nutrients. Total cost: 5.44 for 20 heads of leaf lettuce or kale. In the store, organic kale would cost about 3.00/head. 20 heads = $60.00. Money saved: 54.56 a month or 654.72 a year. This is just off one system and one light! |

The clones are for my classroom and my students and I sell basil to fund a documentary film that we are making on permaculture. It is brining in great classroom funding. |

The sell them for 199.00 and are 90watts. They are the ones in my grow room and it is the same ones that grew my broccoli. As i said, my ebay one was cheap low quality and barely grew anything. Having said that I am sure there are okay companies on ebay, but the question is how to gurantee a good company out of the 1000's of chinese companies that make these lights. The owner of the store in my city takes trips down to China where her often goes right to his manufacturer and orders a custom build. Their website is www.quickgrow.com you would have to phone them though as the last time they updated their website was a long time ago. Ask for Mark, he is the owner and a great guy. |

The farmers market also sells tonnes of it. We are growing 200 basil plants in my class and we are currently selling 250 bags of basil weekly to stores and farmers markets for 1.25 a bag. Most of the places then increase their prices to 3.00 or 3.50 a bag. This brings in 1250.00 a month for our classroom. It is a creative way to fund education, and teach students about business, agriculture, science in action etc. |
