Gas Mask advice
So I've been needing to get a gas mask... was thinking about getting this one - cheap and I'm familiar with it since it looks like the one I remember training with.

I've got a couple those, same mask/same place. However, I bought the 40mm NATO adapter and a case of sealed 40mm filters. Do not rely on the filter that comes with it.

I say no.
Old masks often are dried out and the rubber is cracked.
If you are truly that concerned get what our forces use, I had(ve) a MCU-2Ap gas mask and that one I would trust. Make sure it is NBC, and the standard 60mm or NATO sized canisters. If you don't want to spend that much, get a civilian Israeli gas mask, they take it seriously.

I have 5 of those and they do not look like they have been used at all and the rubber is NOT dry or cracked. They do snug up tight and seem like they would not work for someone with a big/fat face. I discarded the Finnish filters since they are way to old and purchased some NATO filter adapters(40mm to 60mm) from ebay. Great deals on filters from approvedgasmasks.com I bought these: [link to approvedgasmasks.com] Who knows on the reliability of the masks though. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Gas Mask advice
If you're serious about getting a mask, it means you're serious about surviving. Don't pinch pennies and risk your life on a surplus mask to save a few bucks.

I recommend the MSA variety:

[link to www.msanet.com]

"Combines high performance, customized fit, comfort and cost efficiency in a version of the reliable military-style gas mask (MCU-2/P) used by the U.S. Air Force in Operation Desert Storm.

A flexible, one-piece polyurethane lens with a wide field of vision is bonded to the durable Hycar rubber facepiece. A drinking tube provides connection for fluid ingestion in contaminated atmospheres. An internal nose cup with two check valves deflects air from the lens and reduces fogging. A fully elastic, six-point head harness promotes easy on/off and adjustment, with no hair pulling. A standard mechanical speaking diaphragm is included, or MSA’s optional ESP® II communications system can be added. A butyl-coated nylon hood is available for total head protection. The dual-canister mount allows weapon sighting from either shoulder. The CBRN canister contains chemical sorbents and a P100 filter to attract, retain and neutralize contaminants. The Millennium® CBRN gas mask is designed to be used as a system, and while the thread and gasket meet the specifications of the standard, only MSA-manufactured components are tested and certified as assemblies."

Re: Gas Mask advice
Never rely on a used gas mask to offer you any protection. The secret to a good gas mask is the fit test. All masks must be fit tested to your face. I doubt if a fit test kit is available for this mask.

Save your pennies dude and buy something reputable that has a fit test kit available. 3M and North make good masks.

I'll also add that the masks I received from CTD were in great condition, no cracks or anything, straps were all in working order and good shape. I tested them and they sealed on face just fine. Mine also came with a canvas bag and some type of cleaner.

Re: Gas Mask advice
I work in an indoor air quality lab, and what that prior poster said was true, get it fit tested! If you can not, get some smoke bombs or smoke tubes and spray it in your face, see if you notice it.

We use stannic chloride as a smoke irritant in my lab for fit tests but i DUNNO WHERE TO GET THAT OTHER THAN ONLINE SUPPLIERS. sorry for caps too lazy to correct.

Re: Gas Mask advice
I think that mask is fine.

Its alot like my Israeli mask but it uses the 60 mm threaded filters.

If you get that mask pickup an adapter that will convert 40 mm threaded filters into 60 mm.

Because if you happen to come across filters during an emergency the modern ones are 40 mm standard.
