How is that little northern coronal hole creating a moderate three day geomagnetic storm???

A SUNSPOT TURNS TOWARD EARTH: New-cycle sunspot AR2770 is turning toward Earth, revealing the structure of its multiple dark cores. Martin Wise sends this picture from Trenton, Florida: [link to spaceweathergallery.com (secure)]

"This sunspot was an easy target for my solar telescope," says Wise, who uses an 8-inch 'scope with safe solar filters. The sunspot's primary dark core is about as wide as the planet Mars, and it is trailed by several moon-sized "spotlets." These dimensions make it one of the largest sunspot groups of the current Solar Minimum.

AR2770 has emitted several B-class flares since it appeared earlier this week, causing minor waves of ionization to ripple through Earth's upper atmosphere. Other than that, the sunspot has not yet caused any notable space weather. It is, however, slowly growing, so increased activity is possible in the days ahead.

NEW-CYCLE SUNSPOT FACES EARTH: Solar Cycle 25 sunspot AR2770 is facing Earth. If it flares, the explosion will almost certainly be geoeffective. But will it flare? AR2770 has a relatively simple magnetic field that poses little threat for strong explosions. A solar minimum superstorm seems unlikely at this time.

C-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have detected a C1-class solar flare from new-cycle sunspot AR2770 (Aug. 8th @ 03:49 UT). X-rays from the flare ionized Earth's upper atmosphere, briefly disturbing shortwave radio propagation below 10 MHz on the Pacific side of Earth. [link to spaceweather.com (secure)]

LIGHT BRIDGE: New-cycle sunspot AR2770 might be breaking apart. A bright canyon of light--also known as a "light bridge"--is opening in the sunspot's primary core. Amateur astronomer Howard Eskildsen photographed the phenomenon from his backyard observatory in Ocala, Florida.
Follow the arrow: [link to spaceweather.com (secure)]

"I used a violet Calcium-K filter, which highlights the bright magnetic froth around the sunspot group as well as the light bridge cutting the main 'spot in two," explains Eskildsen.

The bridge is about 5,000 miles long, roughly equal to the diameter of Mars. These dimensions make it an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. But if you look, what will you see?

The nature of light bridges is not fully understood. Some research suggests that magnetic fields at the base of a light bridge are busy cross-crossing and reconnecting--the same explosive process that sparks solar flares. Does this mean the primary core of AR2770 will explode? Or quietly fall apart? More often than not, light bridges herald the breakup of a sunspot. Either way, something is about to happen. Stay tuned.

We now have 230 pieces of cataloged debris from the 2020 May 8 Fregat fragmentation event.
The debris has spread all over LEO due to differential precession.
Yet one more reason not to leave upper stages in orbit after they have completed their mission:

SOMETHING UNUSUAL JUST FLEW PAST THE SUN: On August 7th, an unusual object flew past the sun. (Spoiler Alert: It's not an alien armada.) "It was a triple comet," says Karl Battams of the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC, who made this animation using coronagraph images from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO):

[link to spaceweather.com (secure)]

"The two main components are easy to spot, with the third, a very faint, diffuse fragment following alongside the leading piece," he says.

SOHO finds comets all the time. Most are Kreutz sungrazers, fragments of a giant comet that broke up more than 1000 years ago. Since the observatory was launched in 1995, SOHO has discovered more than 3000 members of the Kreutz family dive-bombing the sun.

And that's what makes this comet unusual. "It is not a member of the Kreutz family," says Battams. "Its orbit doesn't match. We're not yet sure where it came from."

[link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov (secure)]

The triple comet is now receding from the sun, fading rapidly from view. There's a slim chance that large ground-based telescopes might be able to track it. If so, they could find clues to its make-up and origin.

"Unfortunately, the prognosis for small fragmenting comets like this is not good," says Battams. "This was probably this comet's first and last pass by the sun, as it has likely now crumbled away entirely. But SOHO will continue to keep watching the sun, and waiting for our next special cometary offering to come along."

Nice catch! sun

C-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: The corpse of decayed sunspot AR2770 erupted this morning, Aug. 15th at 0649 UT, producing a C2-class solar flare. A pulse of X-rays briefly ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio brownout over Asia, the Middle East, and eastern Africa: [link to spaceweather.com (secure)]

NOAA analysts are examining the event to see if it produced a CME. Stay tuned for updates.

LONG-DURATION SOLAR FLARE: A very interesting solar flare is underway now. It's a B1-class flare from a spotless region in the sun's southern hemisphere. Although the amplitude of the flare is relatively low, it has been going on for a long time--more than 90 minutes. The slowly-unfolding explosion has sent a blast wave through the sun's atmosphere and will probably produce a CME.

A SLOW-MOTION SOLAR FLARE: You know an explosion is powerful when it lasts for two hours. Yesterday, Aug. 16th (1726 UT), a B1-class solar flare took even longer to unfold. The 2.5 hr blast sent a powerful shock wave rippling through the sun's atmosphere, shown here in a time-lapse movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory: [link to spaceweather.com (secure)]

No sunspot was involved. The explosion occured in a spotless region of the sun's southern hemisphere. A magnetic filament snapped, hurling debris far and wide. [link to sdowww.lmsal.com (secure)] Some of that debris formed the core of a coronal mass ejection (CME), which has escaped the sun and is now billowing into the Solar System.

Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) are tracking the CME: [link to spaceweather.com (secure)]

Clearly, the storm cloud is not heading directly for Earth. However, NOAA models of the CME's trajectory suggest it could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on August 20th. Minor geomagnetic storms and high-latitude auroras are possible when the CME arrives. Stay tuned.

UPDATE--A CME IS COMING, MAYBE: NOAA analysts have modeled the trajectory of yesterday's CME, described below. Their conclusion: It could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on Aug. 20th. Minor geomagnetic storms and high-latitude auroras are possible when the CME arrives.

A CME IS COMING: High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on Aug. 20th when a CME (coronal mass ejection) is expected to graze Earth's magnetic field. Launched into space on Aug. 16th by a slow-motion solar flare, the CME is not heading directly for Earth. Nevertheless, NOAA models of the CME suggest that a glancing blow is likely. Storm levels could reach category G1.
