Any theories on Earth facing sunspot quiet? Yes I am familiar with Maunder minimum, and sc24.

I think it is largely a myth due to our subjective viewpoint. However last cycle we saw some strange Earth-facing CMEs which were seemingly deflected away from Earth. Perhaps the Angels are just holding back the wrath for the appointed time...

I saw it reported that we had 49 X-flares during Cycle 24 (it sure didn't seem like that many to me). I believe almost all of those were on the Earth-facing disk. However, very few were from the +/- 30 degree 'sweet spot' of geoeffectiveness. I personally believe that the strongest level of x-rays come from the sides of flares rather than directly out the top. Just my pet theory, but it seems that most strong x-rays come from events near the limbs.

The Maunder Minimum was a period of very few sunspots in general and is a whole other topic. We've had many very active cycles since then.

Mr.2835 should hang his head in shame. He's being out-flared by a spotless plage (2836) and even a far side region (old 2838).

CO-ROTATING INTERACTION REGION: NOAA forecasters say there is a chance of geomagnetic unrest on July 9th when a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. CIRs are transition zones between slow- and fast-moving solar wind. Solar wind plasma piles up in these regions, producing CME-like density gradients that can spark auroras.

HOPING FOR MY MABUS COMET!

CORONAL MASS EJECTION: Decaying sunspot AR2837 (N17W36) erupted on July 7th, hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. Most of the CME is heading away from Earth, but it still might affect us. NOAA analysts are looking into the possibility of a glancing blow by the CME's flank a few days from now. Stay tuned.

SOLAR WIND, INCOMING: A high-speed stream of solar wind is approaching Earth. ETA: July 11-12. The gaseous material is flowing from an equatorial hole in the sun's atmosphere. Minor geomagnetic storms and auroras are possible when the solar wind arrives.

I'm embarrassed to confess that I never laid eyes on AR2840. I've been distracted with a medical issue this week (getting old really sucks, lol). AR2840, now a far side region, has produced all of the action recently. Three big c-flares, countless B's and multiple CMEs.

The sun is nearly spotless now.

Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...
Solar activity reached low levels as Region 2840 (N27, L=036) produced
multiple C-class flares. These included a C6 at 09/0755 UTC, a C7 at
09/1050 UTC, and a C4 at 09/1725 UTC. Associated CMEs were observed in
SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery at 09/0812 UTC, 09/1112 UTC, and 09/1736 UTC. None
of the CMEs were Earth-directed.

New Region 2841 (S18E61, Bxo/beta) was numbered today.

Solar activity is expected to be very low on 10-12 Jul.

Things won't be quiet for long.

Quiet day on old Sol... a small new alpha spot has rotated over the NE limb and was numbered 2842. Dissipating AR 2841 produced a B7 flare.
