Our shields are lower now than then. We have less protection. There are several factors involved. It wouldn't have to be extreme speed.

MERCURY AND A CME: Looking for Mercury? Don't. It's blindingly close to the sun. Yesterday, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) photographed Mercury only 6 degrees from the solar disk. Play the movie and watch a CME target the first planet:

No, the CME didn't actually hit Mercury. Mercury is at the farside of its orbit, preparing to pass behind the sun (astronomers call this "superior solar conjunction"). The narrow CME passed between us and Mercury, creating only the appearance of impact.

At closest approach on Aug. 1st, Mercury will be just 1.7 degrees from the sun. The day before, Mercury will skim the outskirts of the Beehive star cluster. Human eyes cannot see these events, but coronagraphs can. Join SOHO for a ringside seat.

That eruption looks HUGE...I've been feeling my
familiar "space weather" symptoms as well. This
particular couple of days have been brutal, though.
Don't know why these past eruptions have affected
me more than most, though (and NO...I didn't take
the "clotshot.") Any chance this puppy is going to
SLOW DOWN AT ALL? Do the forecast for the sun at all?

Woah. There we have the answer...whatever was going
on with spaceweather has triggered an 8.2 pt. quake
near Perryville, Alaska along the Alusian Island chain.
If it's big enough to cause that kind of earth-movement
I'm not at all surprised by my own physical reaction.

know WHY I'm having these weird reactions I don't
look around for another (and worse) cause for it! lol!

A CME IS ABOUT TO MISS EARTH (BARELY): Yesterday, July 28th (0700 UT), a magnetic filament in the sun's northern hemisphere erupted. The resulting CME is going to pass by Earth on Aug. 1st, barely missing our planet.

Update: NOAA analysts modeled the eruption overnight and confirmed that the CME should not hit Earth.

Soon we'll see another large cluster of sunspots (maybe some big ones) and solar activity will exceed what we've seen so far from Cycle 25. Hopefully the big events will be visible Earthside so we can study them in detail. I also hope no coincidental devastating EQs occur then.

In the meantime we'll watch for filaments and await the inevitable uptick....

Filament eruptions in the NW quadrant sometimes cause unexpectedly strong geomagnetic storms (G2). But it all depends on polarity which is impossible to predict. We'll wait and see what happens, if anything, but these ejections seem to have greater effects near the time of equinoxes. I'm leaning towards a weak impact but I may be wrong.

50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK APOLLO 15 VISITED THE MOON!

July 26, 2021, marks the 50th anniversary of a space mission that cannot be described as anything less than spectacular.

Apollo 15 was the first of NASA’s manned lunar “J” missions — Moon landings that supplied astronauts with a robust lunar lander capable of staying on the surface for three days. (The prior landings of Apollo 11, 12, and 14 topped out at about half that time).

The extra fuel and consumables carried by the advanced lunar lander allowed for three separate moonwalks (EVAs), each lasting 4 to 7 hours. NASA also updated the orbiting command module with additional cameras and equipment.

Apollo 15 launched on July 26, 1971, and returned to Earth on August 7th, with spaceflight veteran and mission commander Dave Scott, command module pilot Al Worden, and lunar module pilot Jim Irwin. The three astronauts met all of their mission goals and extended scientific knowledge of the Moon. In addition to extensive geology work, the Apollo 15 moonwalkers pioneered the use of the Lunar Rover, a small electric vehicle that extended their exploration range.

While NOAA models suggest all the encounters will be near misses, Earth might still experience ripples in the solar wind as the CMEs pass by.
