WANTED: WHITE LIGHT IMAGES OF THE SUN: Daily sun images on Spaceweather.com are temporarily out of date, stuck on June 21st, because of a power outage at Stanford University where Solar Dynamics Observatory data are processed. The outage is caused by a wildfire and may take days to rectify. Meanwhile, readers are encouraged to submit their own full disk white light images so we can see what the sun looks like today.

How are they getting these solar eruption pictures
--I thought that wildfire near Stanford U. where they
process the films has been closed?

I would sure like some European LINKS to watch the sun
on some other sats. Are there some anyone has? Please
post them!

NASA needs to seriously consider a back-up site for processing SDO imagery. This outage for 5 days is inexcusable . What about the supposedly beefed-up Global Deep Space Network? The sun is the MOST IMPORTANT celestial object in our daily lives. WE deserve better for the billions of $ funneled into NASA for garbage climate science.

I am very surprised this "down time" has gone on for
5 days now. And, YES! The SUN is the MOST IMPORTANT CELESTIAL
OBJECT in our daily lives...They're devoting millions of
tax payer dollars to technology to look hundreds of light
years away (THAT still works)...and our SUN gets a crummy
little lab that's not even protected with an alternate
electricity source. I'm very disappointed, as well.

At 8:44am (eastern) I got a space weather text alert...

SOLAR WIND ALERT: The solar wind is blowing faster than 700
km/s (727 km/s). A strong solar wind storm is in progress.

SURPRISE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A minor G1-class geomagnetic storm broke out around midnight (UT) on June 25-26. Forecasters aren't sure why. The prime suspect is an unexpected CME embedded in the solar wind. So far no auroras have been reported from the 6 hour storm.

GOOD-BYE, BIG SUNSPOT: Big sunspot AR3038 is about to rotate over the northwestern limb of the sun. Pepe Manteca sends this parting shot from Barcelona, Spain:

"I inserted an image of Earth for scale," says Manteca. The sunspot's primary core is big enough to swallow our entire planet.

As the sunspot rotates over the sun's limb this weekend, it will become magnetically connected to Earth via the Parker Spiral. Energetic particles accelerated by flares will be funneled in our direction despite the fact the sunspot is facing almost directly away from us--strange, but true!

Yes, another surprise storm (is NOAA hiring new talent yet?).....

.... and a SURPRISE HALO CME, too! Nobody seems to know for certain where it came from..... Type III halo according to CACTus with a median velocity around 750 km/s.

It appears to be Earth-directed to my eyes, but some say a farside event. Most of the filaments were in the northern hemisphere, but AR3040 may be responsible. I haven't even checked NOAA yet but we'll know in a couple of days....

POSSIBLE CME IMPACTS THIS WEEK: Yesterday, a mish-mash of overlapping CMEs billowed away from the sun. Some were faint, one was bright and possibly farsided. If any of them are Earth-directed--and that's a big IF--they would probably arrive on June 29th. Stay tuned.

were shut down due to the wildfires. Or is this image

I'm posting this with a "tongue-in-cheek" sarcasm...so
don't take it too seriously! lol!

So...just in the "spirit of GLP" (if you co-sign that idea)
...is it even in the rhealm of "possible" that the reason
that the SOHO FEEDS were pulled for several days was
because THIS odd movie clip showing some "extra-solar-body"
passing between the SAT and the sun's surface?

Hey! I'm NOT saying that's one of the "moons of Nibiru"
(Good Lord, WHO in their right mind would bring that up
on a solar page?)...but it could be some kind of asteroid
of something, right?

(Or maybe its just MERCURY...as we have seen pass the sun before.
Just the exception that MERCURY's IMAGE has been photographed
by the SATS in the past never appeared THAT LARGE!) Just sayin! lol!

FAILURE TO LAUNCH: Yesterday, June 28th, a dark filament of magnetism erupted in the sun's northern hemisphere. The debris failed to leave the sun's atmosphere; no CME was observed after the explosion.

AN ECLIPSE OF THE SUN IN SPACE: Today, the Moon passed in front of the sun, producing a partial solar eclipse. You had to be in space to see it. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the 35-minute event:

At the peak of the eclipse, the Moon covered 67% of the sun, and lunar mountains were backlit by solar fire. Note the bumps and irregularities in this close-up image of the Moon's limb:

High-resolution images like these can help the SDO science team better understand the telescope. They reveal how light diffracts around SDO's optics and filter support grids. Once these are calibrated, it is possible to correct SDO data for instrumental effects and sharpen images of the sun even more than before.
