Another noteworthy solar flare to report. A moderately strong M5.6 event peaked at 01:56 UTC (Jan 11) and was centered around AR 3184 in the southeast quadrant. Fun times on the Sun when multiple regions are trading stronger solar flares back and forth. As always, updates will be provided should any of the events eventually launch a coronal mass ejection (CME) towards Earth.

We'll get good energy from that last X. I have a weird feeling we're in store for a whole lot more.

ANOTHER X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: The sun produced another X-flare on Jan. 10th, this time from new sunspot AR3186. This movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the X1-class explosion hurling a plume of debris into space:



Radiation from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout over the South Pacific: blackout map. Mariners and ham radio operators may have noticed fadeouts and other unusual propagation effects at frequencies below ~30 MHz.

This is the 3rd X-flare in a week, and each flare has come from a different sunspot. It's not just a single active region; the *whole sun* is becoming more active. NOAA forecasters say there is a 30% chance of another X-flare on Jan. 11th. X

Another X-class flare from the eastern limb of the Sun 🔥 This time from Region 13184, reaching X1.9 level. Although this event was associated with an R3 (strong) radio blackout, there does not seem to be a concurrent CME—making this eruption a so-called confined flare

We got an X-class flare, after a while! 🔥 AR 13182 has produced an X1.2 flare—just above M-level, but still!

This region has shown eruptive behaviour already from behind the limb. Let's see whether it puts on a show over the next ~2 weeks as it crosses the Earth-facing disc 👀

I didn't know this about the sun either. Thought at first it was a typo but it is mentioned in several places.

Just noticed a post on FB that the sun has had a
large CME/flare event (around 6:00 PM EST by UTC time)
--looking to find more info on that.

Meanwhile enjoy this very "classy presentation" from
Youtube author from Athens, Greece ("Ilias") giving a
stunning review of the "GREEN COMET" (CometZTF) that
is currently at solar perihelion. It may be visible from
Earth around Feb. 1st WITHOUT BINACULARS! (I'll be watching
for THAT announcement/location then.)

Just a "tid-bit" I noticed watching the video as it
reports in which actual CONSTELLATION the GREEN COMET finds
itself tonight (1-12-2023)...it is the constellaion
"Corona Boreilus!" I thought that a little coincidental
that the world has been in a "Corona pandemic" going on
3 years now--and there's that pesky "CROWN" word showing
up! Kindof "spooky!"


The Constellation "Ophiuchus" wrestles with
"...a snake to keep it AWAY FROM THE CORONA..."

THE "MYSTERY" FLARE - the hot view: There was some major activity behind the NE limb today. All we see are some remarkably big post-flare loops (compare to size of the Earth). Note the tops are bright which means they are hotter or denser or both. The 131A line is at about 6 MK.

Solar Activity

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity reached high levels due to five M-class flares (R1-Minor)
during the period, the largest was a M1.5 at 12/0646 UTC. Six numbered
sunspot groups were present on the visible solar disk and X-ray flux
background continued at C-class levels. Region 3181 (S19W74,
Eai/beta-gamma) underwent notable decay and became less active. Region
3182 (S18W20, Eki/beta-gamma) underwent some decay in the trailer area
and growth in the intermediate spot section. The region became somewhat
unstable and produced several lower-level M-class flares (R1). Region
3184 (S13E26, Cso/beta) experienced decay and lost its mixed polarity
configuration. Region 3185 (N20W41, Dao/beta) grew; in particular in the
leader section. Region 3186 (N24E38, Ekc/beta-gamma) underwent notable
growth and retained a mixed polarity spread. The region was also the
source of the aforementioned M1.5 flare. Region 3188 (S23E58, Dro/beta)
rotated further into view and was inactive.

An area of pores (N20W16) underwent periods of emergence and decay. An
apparent large penumbral spot just began to rotate onto the southeast
(S14E90) limb near the end of the period. We await subsequent
observatory reports or a better view prior to region designation. There
was a small coronal disruption noted in GOES SUVI imagery that began
after 12/0100 UTC in the vicinity of Region 3185. This may be associated
with a CME departing the north-northwest limb that was first observed in
SOHO/LASCO coronagraph imagery at 12/0200 UTC, although confidence in
this association is not certain. Regardless, analysis and modeling is in
progress with regards to this activity.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is likely to be moderate, with the continued likelihood
of M-class (R1-R2; Minor-Moderate) flares and a slight chance of X-class
(R3-Strong) events 13-15 Jan. Region 3181 will rotate beyond the
southwest limb over days one and two, however, the remaining regions of
3182, 3184, and 3186 will keep flare probabilities elevated.
