They only last a few minutes and you need to be focused on the exact region at the right time. Easier said than done. The GONG Network telescopes are ground-based solar h-alpha scopes and they manage to capture real-time images of solar flares. NSO is not part of NASA. The GOES Solar Ultraviolet Imager is likewise near real-time and not run by NASA. Beside those 2 there's probably dozens of solar observatories around the globe (yes, it's round!) which have no connection to NASA or ESA. Your comment is a FAIL on many levels. In cycle 24 we saw 2 or 3 Earth-directed CMEs just vanish into thin space. I still can't figure out how that happened, but it's a possibility. In this case, I feel that even if the bulk plasma misses to the west we still oughtta see a shock to the magnetosphere. It was a FULL HALO, so Earth should be well within the zone of influence. For now I'm just assuming its late and slower than the models suggest. The avg. travel time is roughly 3 days so I wouldn't give up on it yet. We're at about 56 hours now... out of a 72-hr window. I thought it looked faster than avg. but our methods of measuring these things are only primitive guesswork at best.  Good call. It did eventually swing in for several hours! You’re good Hugh! They called for 2 brief periods of Kp5.33 from 5/10- 5/12... and they were exactly spot-on accurate. I believe this was an accident because they're rarely right, lol. Nevertheless, ya gotta tip your hat when they get it right. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov (secure)] Honestly, they changed their forecast to expect G2 or G3 conditions which never happened. I saw articles from all over proclaiming a big aurora show which never happened. I wasn't the only one fooled by this CME arrival. I did predict the positive Bz polarity, but the velocity and density was a big disappointment. Maybe next time.....
