OUTRAGE of the DAY-

Today I got a press release from the NSO (Nat'l Solar Observatory) and they proudly offered EIGHT hi-res images of solar phenomena from an entire year of observing. This is a joke and an outrage!

DKIST is the biggest solar telescope in the world (4.24 meters diameter) and offers unprecedented resolution using adaptive optics. It was paid for by U.S. taxpayers through the National Science Foundation. As a U.S. taxpayer I'm a co-owner of this facility and deserve unfettered access to all their images and data on a timely basis. An annual PR release and a few old pics just doesn't cut it! I sent them an email expressing my displeasure and outrage. The NSO also runs the GONG Network so they know how to deliver real-time data.

The U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (Inouye Solar Telescope) released eight new images of the Sun featuring a variety of sunspots and quiet regions of the Sun.

The newly released images make up a small fraction of the data obtained from the first Cycle. The Inouye Solar Telescope’s Data Center continues to calibrate and deliver data to the scientists and public.

The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) is a scientific facility for studies of the sun at Haleakala Observatory on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Known as the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) until 2013, it was named after Daniel K. Inouye, a US Senator for Hawaii.[1] It is the world's largest solar telescope, with a 4-meter aperture.[2][3] The DKIST is funded by National Science Foundation and managed by the National Solar Observatory. The total project cost is $344.13 million

GEOMAGNETIC STORM UNDERWAY NOW:

A minor G1-class geomagnetic storm is underway on May 21st as Earth feels the effect of another probable near-miss CME. South-pointing magnetic fields in the CME's wake are opening a crack in Earth's magnetosphere, allowing solar wind to enter.

Space Weather Update

Geomagnetic Storm: Minor (G1) to Moderate (G2) geomagnetic storm conditions observed during the past 6 hours due to an enhanced solar wind environment. The solar wind speed is currently near 600 km/s and the Bz component of the IMF has been pointing south at times. Isolated periods of storming will remain possible during the next 24-48 hours.

Halo CME Observed: In other news, a halo coronal mass ejection (CME) is visible in the latest coronagraph imagery. When reviewing the latest imagery courtesy of SDO/AIA, it appears that this may be related to a farsided event and not Earth facing.

AR3310/12 has now entered the Earth 'strike zone'. If you recall 3310 unleashed an occulted X-flare (M9.6) a few days ago. AR3311 will also enter Earth's 'strike zone' tomorrow. A major CME from either region will likely be geoeffective for the next few days. Be forewarned.

Definitely far side major eruption. The plasma flow from the west limb is a much slower release from 3305 and helmet streamer. We'll be lookin' down the barrel of the twin cannons 3310 &3311 for the next week.

Yep, used to go all day without a shirt on for the whole summer.
Now you can't be out in the sun for 2 hours without being burnt to a crisp.

The sun is very intense.

Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity was moderate. Region 3311 (N18E05, Fai/Beta-Gamma-Delta)
was responsible for numerous C-class flares and a M3 flare at 23/1213
UTC, which was the largest of the period. This AR continued to exhibit
overall area growth and maintained a small delta magnetic configuration
in its intermediate spots, remaining the largest and most complex region
on the disk. Regions 3310 (S19W05, Cho/Beta), 3312 (S23E16, Cro/Beta)
and 3313 (N23E21, Hsx/Alpha) were little changed and relatively quiet.
Region 3315 (S15E45, Bxo/Beta) developed and was numbered this period,
but it too was quiet.

A type IV radio sweep was observed at 23/1120 UTC by USAF observatories
and is still in progress as of the time of this writing. This event was
most likely associated with a far-sided, fast, full halo CME that was
first observed by SOHO-NASA C2 coronagraph imagery at approximately
23/1101 UTC. No other notable CMEs were observed in available imagery.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for
isolated M-class flare (R1-2/Minor-Moderate) events through 25 May
primarily due to the history and potential of AR 3311. M-class flare
probabilities increase to likely levels 26 May with the anticipated
return of old AR 3296.

Helios' Notes-
Both large sunspot regions are directly inside the Earth strike zone. AR3311 is still Beta-Gamma-Delta and stretches nearly 20 degrees wide. AR3310 and 3312 are actually one huge region. Both regions have produced M5+ flares and are capable of X-level eruptions.

With a longitude of 00, any CME will be Earth-directed. So far I don't see any sign of a major CME yet. Must wait for coronagraph images later....

NOAA says ar3314 has been resurrected.--

Region 3315 (S17E32, Dai/Beta) showed marked development as it quickly
gained asymmetric penumbra, grew in over all size, and produced a M1/SF
flare at 24/1910 UTC. Region 3314 (N12W17, Cso/Beta) redeveloped
trailing negative polarity spots, re-distinguishing itself from AR 3311,
and was thus separated and resurrected.

M1.3 attributed to AR3315, but AR3311 was simultaneously flaring. In my opinion the C7 came from 3315 and then the M1.3 was from 3311 (or a combined x-ray signature).
