BIG EARTH-FACING SUNSPOT: Growing sunspot AR3315 is now 10 times wider than Earth. Philippe Tosi photographed the behemoth from his backyard observatory in Nîmes, France:

It's big and dangerous. The sunspot has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for strong explosions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 55% chance of M-class solar flares and a 10% chance of X-flares on May 29th. Any eruptions will be geoeffective because the sunspot is almost directly facing Earth.

THREE minor M 1 flares today.....2 good-bye shots from departing AR3310 and an impulsive M1.5 from AR3315.

More spots are emerging including a tiny region in an unusually high latitude +30 degrees N. ... and more coming over the east limb.

Got the glasses and they were fun to try out. :)

I think the haze/smoke from Canada took away from my view.

I expected to see the big ol' sunspot, but nope.

SUBSIDING CHANCE OF FLARES: Dangerous sunspot AR3315 became less dangerous today. Its magnetic field has decayed, losing the delta configuration that gave it potential energy for X-class solar flares. Lesser M-class flares are still possible, though, with NOAA estimating a 40%-chance of M-flares on May 30th.

I invested in a sheet of solar filter material during the Minimum and fashioned a home-made solar screen for my cheap Newtonian reflector telescope. I wish I could get better resolution images but I only have a smartphone for a camera. I'm still happy to see some of these sunspots without going blind, lol.

Solar Activity

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity increased to moderate levels (R1-minor). Departed Region
3310 (S20,L=283) produced two impulsive M flares -- an M1.2/Sf flare at
30/0810 UTC and an M1.3 flare at 30/1022 UTC. Region 3315 (S17W48,
Eko/beta-gamma-delta), the largest spot group on the disk, also produced
an impulsive M1.4 flare at 30/1338 UTC. Region 3319 (S18W15, Dai/beta)
was also of note, growing in area and spot count. Region 3322 (N16W38,
Bxo/beta) was numbered this period after showing signs of slight growth.
The other numbered sunspot groups were stable or in decay. No
Earth-directed CMEs were detected.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for M-class flares
through 02 Jun.

Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity reached moderate levels (R1-minor) due several M-class
flares. The largest was a slow-rising and lengthy M-class event from
Region 3323 (S05E68, Dao/beta). The flare began at 31/2147 UTC and
despite stalling briefly in its progression, eventually peaked as an
M4.3 flare at 31/2252 UTC. Region 3319 (S19W27, Dhi, beta-gamma-delta)
also produced an M1 flare at 31/1226 UTC. Region 3315 (S17W58,
Dko/beta-delta) remains large and complex but relatively inactive. The
other 7 regions were either stable or in decay. CMEs were noted off the
west and north limbs, but none are expected to be Earth-directed.

Solar activity is expected to be low with chance for M-class flares
through 03 Jun.

MINOR GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (UPDATED): NOAA forecasters say that minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on June 3rd when a stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. Originally predicted to arrive on June 2nd, the gaseous material is flowing slower than expected from a pair of holes in the sun's atmosphere.
