Three NASA satellites recreate solar eruption in 3-D

The more solar observatories, the merrier: Scientists have developed new models to see how shocks associated with coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, propagate from the Sun - an effort made possible only by combining data from three NASA satellites to produce a much more robust mapping of a CME than any one could do alone.

Solar Storm to Amp Up Earth's Northern Lights Wednesday

A minor solar storm will reach Earth Wednesday (March 14) and could amplify the planet's auroras, making them visible from the northernmost parts of the U.S., space weather officials said.

States in the "northern tier" of the United States, such as Michigan and Maine, could see northern lights from the amped-up auroral display, according to an alert from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in Boulder, Colorado. The storm could also trigger fluctuations in some weak power grids but will have only a minor impact on satellites in space, the center said.

SWPC scientists predicted that this week's geomagnetic storm will be a G1 class, a minor event, and run from Wednesday to Thursday (March 15).

A massive canyon-like hole has opened in the sun's atmosphere, and it is spewing a broad stream of solar wind toward Earth.

Coronal holes appear, in various shapes and forms, several times each month. This one is unusually wide, stretching more than 800,000 km across the face of the sun. NOAA forecasters say there is a 55% chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms when the solar wind stream arrives on March 14th or 15th.

I've seen larger Coronal Holes than this one they are
showing...but maybe there is something about the position
on the sun where the "canyon" is located versus Earth's
position to it. Not sure...Guess We will see!

Mystery of Purple Lights in Sky Solved With Help From Citizen Scientists

Notanee Bourassa knew that what he was seeing in the night sky was not normal. Bourassa, an IT technician in Regina, Canada, trekked outside of his home on July 25, 2016, around midnight with his two younger children to show them a beautiful moving light display in the sky — an aurora borealis. He often sky gazes until the early hours of the morning to photograph the aurora with his Nikon camera, but this was his first expedition with his children. When a thin purple ribbon of light appeared and starting glowing, Bourassa immediately snapped pictures until the light particles disappeared 20 minutes later. Having watched the northern lights for almost 30 years since he was a teenager, he knew this wasn’t an aurora. It was something else.

Aurora Watch Continues

A coronal hole stream continues to move past Earth as we prepare to start the weekend. Isolated periods of enhanced geomagnetic activity is being observed at higher latitudes. A minor (G1) geomagnetic storm watch will remain in effect during the next 12 hours and visible aurora will be likely for regions at higher latitudes.

Geomagnetic Storm 14th of March 2018

Totally amazing aurora tonight (the forecast was right) whilst guiding for Lights Over Lapland. Multiple coronas (i.e. super fast moving auroras straight above us) possibly the best I've ever seen.

Anyway I did some realtime video of one of the best bits. It's a few minutes long but if you are into aurora I think it's worth viewing.

Lots of colours and some super fast auroras dancing across the sky.

Massive Northern Light display illuminates sky over Artic Circle

Massive Northern Lights were seen dancing in the sky over the Arctic Circle overnight from Wednesday (March 14) to Thursday (March 15).

The spectacular fast-moving auroras could be seen filling up the skies above the northern Finnish city of Rovaniemi just before midnight and according to a local Northern Lights photographer, these were the best auroras since September 2017.

The bright white, green and even pink auroras were clearly visible to the naked eye.
