After navigating my old broken links, I finally found a good article on Stealth Solar Storms from National Solar Observatory. Very interesting.

STEALTH SOLAR STORMS-

“The problem is that whatever is causing these stealth events is beyond what we can see with telescopes we have now,” said Alexei Pevtsov of the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, NM. He is co-author with Olga Panasenco and Sara Martin of Helio Research in La Crescenta, CA, of a recent Solar Physics paper on stealth CMEs. Their research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

While magnetism is a tiny portion of the Sun’s total energy output, it causes CMEs, sunspots, flares, filaments, and a range of other activities and how they are expressed as space weather across the solar system.

Using satellite images, Pevtsov, Panasenco, and Martin studied two regions that showed no signs of being ready to erupt, on Aug. 9, 2001, and March 3, 2011, but did so anyway.
