Across The Rainbow Bridge
hello everyone. 4 months ago, i had to make the difficult decision of putting my wonderful shepherd, kai, my companion of 11 years to sleep. it was the hardest thing i have had to do yet, in my life. it's taken me quite sometime to come to terms with it but thankfully, i'm now beginning to experience more joy in her memories, than sadness.

well, today, my brother was forced to make the same decision for his dog, gracie, kai's sister and litter mate.

this of course, has brought back a flood of emotions from my own day, and my heart goes out to my brother and his family and what they are going through right now.

although i am not a religious person, by any means, i found a poem on the rainbow bridge site that i felt compelled to copy and place in my documents as a prayer for kai, and of which i find is most appropriate today. i spent some quiet time this morning connecting with kai and asking her to be there to meet her sister when she crosses over. i'm trusting both kai and gracie are joyfully playing together right now.

so, this is for all of you who have lost a beloved 4-legged friend, or may be in the midst of having to make a difficult decision, for their sake.

love and peace to you all~

A PRAYER FOR MY KAI

Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honour,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honour her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
who will bring me home.

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord,
for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

Amen.

yeah, they totally are. don't know what we'd do without them - sometimes i really do like them more than people - at least some people.

Re: Across The Rainbow Bridge
i find it absolutely amazing how these little furry critters, who never ever 'verbally' communicate to us in their whole lives, have such an effect on us and are capable of bringing so much joy. it really is astounding. maybe we should be speaking less and instead, demonstrate more through actions (loving). it seems that they are able to do just that, and why we love them so much.

thanks, ex - it's much appreciated. i hope others will find some comfort from the poem - although it's sad, i also felt hopeful in believing that both kai and gracie are happy and at peace.

I am pretty sure that if there is some sort of afterlife they go to the best place of all. I feel the same about Suzy. I lost the little hound in 1984 and still think of her often. They do have souls.

no, i bought her from a breeder in calgary (where we lived before we moved to v. island). their shepherds were bred mostly for law enforcement, in canada and the states. as far as for both my brother and myself, they were family pets, although i did start doing some training with kai for search and rescue. she was doing great until i was in a fairly bad motor vehicle accident that laid me up for over a year. so, never did finish with her training. i think she would have made a great s&r doggie.
