Maybe because it is Potassium IODIDE and NOT Iodine being discussed?
One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one.

Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?. . .J. Handy

Re: Hey Potassium Iodine Tards...Read This!!! Think Twice Before Taking POTASSIUM IODINE!
It would be very foolish to overdose on the stuff. Everyone has their own individual need for iodine as a nutritional element. The fact is that most people are low or deficient on iodine and would therefore take up radioactive iodine when encountered. Why do you think they add iodine to salt? Maybe it was to protect us from fallout during the above-ground testing years. The ideal situation is to have as much only as your body needs and not more. Then your body will have no use for the radioactive stuff and excrete it. Preventive potassium iodide has been proven effective in fallout areas in preventing thyroid cancers. But do not overdose on the stuff.

Iodine: The Universal Nutrient

Dr. Guy E. Abraham M.D.

[link to www.healthsalon.org]

Summary of findings based on a review of the literature, and recent clinical research studies2-13, the concept of orthoiodosupplementation can be summarized as follows:

1. The nutrient iodine is essential for every cell of the human body requiring peripheral concentrations of inorganic iodide ranging from 10-6M to 10-5M.

2. In non-obese subjects without a defecting cellular transport system for iodine, these concentrations can be achieved with daily intake of 12.5 mg to 50 mg elemental iodine. The adult body retains approximately 1.5 gm iodine at sufficiency. At such time, the ingested iodine is quantitatively excreted in the urine as iodide.

3. The thyroid gland is the most efficient organ of the human body, capable of concentrating iodide by 2 orders of magnitude to reach 10-6M iodide required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones when peripheral levels of inorganic iodide are in the 10-8M range.

4. Goiter and cretinism are evidence of extremely severe iodine deficiency, because the smallest intake of iodine that would prevent these conditions, that is 0.05 mg per day, is 1000 times less than the optimal intake of 50 mg elemental iodine.

5. The thyroid gland has a protective mechanism, limiting the uptake of peripheral iodide to a maximum of 0.6 mg per day when 50 mg or more elemental iodine are ingested. This amount therefore would serve as a preventive measure against radioactive fallout.

6. An intake of 50 mg elemental iodine per day would achieve peripheral concentration of iodide at 10-5M, which is the concentration of iodide markedly enhancing the singlet triplet radiationless transition. Singlet oxygen causes oxidative damage to DNA and macromolecules, predisposing to the carcinogenic effects of these reactive oxygen species.5 This effect would decrease DNA damage, with an anticarcinogenic effect.

7. Preliminary data so far suggest that orthoiodosupplementation results in detoxification of the body from the toxic metals aluminum, cadmium, lead and mercury.

8. Orthoiodosupplementation increases urinary excretion of fluoride and bromide, decreasing the iodine-inhibiting effects of these halides.

9. Most patients on a daily intake ranging from 12.5 mg to 50 mg elemental iodine reported higher energy levels and greater mental clarity with 50 mg (4 tablets Iodoral), daily. The amount of iodine used in patients with Fibrocystic Disease of the Breast by Ghent et al20 is 0.1 mg/Kg BW per day, 10 times below the optimal daily intake of 50 mg. In our experience, patients with this clinical condition responded faster and more completely when ingesting 50 mg iodine/iodide per day.

10. For best results, orthoiodosupplementation should be part of a complete nutritional program, emphasizing magnesium instead of calcium.

11. A beneficial effect of orthoiodosupplementation was observed in the clinical conditions listed in Table I.5,7,12,13

12. The iodine/iodide loading test and serum inorganic iodide levels are reliable means of assessing whole body sufficiency for elemental iodine for quantifying the bioavailability of the forms of iodine ingested and for assessing cellular uptake and utilization of iodine by target cells.

13. Orthoiodosupplementation may be the safest, simplest, most effective and least expensive way to solve the healthcare crisis crippling our nation.

So...on one hand, we here that 50mg a day is a good doseage, on the other hand we're told that this much ingestion is far too much. HOWEVER, even this article doesn't get anywhere NEAR the 130mg daily suggestion by the CDC.

Re: Hey Potassium Iodine Tards...Read This!!! Think Twice Before Taking POTASSIUM IODINE!
This is an excellent thread. People need to know the effects of Potassium Iodide before taking it! It can cause cardiac problems and more. It can in fact, make a person more hyper-thyroid and with those people that are already on thyroid meds a whole new problem.

My husband had his thyroid 'radiated' as he collapsed one day nearly having a heart attack. The doctors at the time explained all this to us and myself, I have hashimoto's so my thyroid has been slowly killed off by my own body.

It pays to do your homework instead of following the panic.

 Quoting: TheRealUFOMan

"In cases of true radiation exposure, the benefits of potassium iodide outweigh the risks.

Taking stable iodide tablets can protect the thyroid from exposure to radioactive iodine-131 by "filling up" the gland and preventing it from taking up the radioactive iodine. But potassium iodide can be harmful to people who are allergic to the substance or who have the skin disorders dermatitis herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

hummm....not sure I agree...not only am I possibly going to hurt my thyroid, the rest of my body isn't protected so what's the use in possibly hurting myself when I'm NOT really protecting my whole body anyway?

Re: Hey Potassium Iodine Tards...Read This!!! Think Twice Before Taking POTASSIUM IODINE!
In the event of a nuclear radiation accident there is no doubt KI is effective in preventing Thyroid cancer.

From [link to en.wikipedia.org]

"Poland, 300 miles from Chernobyl, also distributed KI to protect its population. Approximately 18 million doses were distributed, with follow-up studies showing no known thyroid cancer among KI recipients."

If there were any negative side effects among the 18 million recipients of the preventative dose they weren't significant enough to note.

From the same Wikipedia article:
As of 1996, except for thyroid cancer, there has been no confirmed increase in the rates of other cancers, including leukemia, among the...public, that have been attributed to releases from the accident

From [link to www.optimox.com]

"My clinical experience with using physiologic doses of iodine/iodide (6.25-50mg/day) has been very positive. To date, in my practice, my partners and I have treated over 3,000 patients. The side effects with using these doses have been minimal. Rarely, have I observed iodism (metallic taste in mouth, frontal sinus pressure/pain, and increased salivation). Iodism is easily rectified by adjusting the dose of iodine down or simply telling the patient to await the resolution of these symptoms which takes approximately 1-3 weeks. True iodine allergy to inorganic, non-radioactive iodine is very rare. In treating over 3,000 patients, I have found three patients with "allergy" to non-radioactive inorganic iodine/iodide. An acupressure technique, NAET (NAET.com) has proven very effective to reverse this allergy. Allergy to fish, shellfish or radioactive iodine does not mean there is an allergy to inorganic non-radioactive iodine. In fact, true inorganic iodine allergy is very rare."

From [link to curezone.com]

"Iodine was used for a wide variety of ailments in the 19 and
early part of the 20 centuries, especially for syphilis and chronic
lung disease. For many years physicians used potassium Iodide in
doses starting at 1.5 to 3 g increasing up to more than 10 g/day for
weeks at a time to treat bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, reportedly with good results and surprisingly
few side effects.
The Nobel laureate Albert Szent Györgi
(1893.1986), the physician who discovered vitamin C, writes:
.When I was a medical student, Iodine in the form of KI [potassium
iodide] was the universal medicine. Nobody knew what it did, but it
did something and did something good.. The standard dose was 1 g,
which contains 770mgof iodine.

This 19 century medicine continues to be used in gram amounts
in the 21 century, by dermatologists
. They treat inflammatory
dermatoses, like nodular vasculitis and pyoderma gangrenosum,
with SSKI (supersaturated potassium iodide), beginning with an
iodine dose of 900 mg/day, followed by weekly increases of up to 6
g/day as tolerated
. Fungal eruptions, like sporotrichosis, are treated
initially in gram amounts with great effect.

A 54-year-old man, thinking it was iced tea, drank a .home
preparation. of SSKI in water that his aunt kept in the refrigerator
for her rheumatism. Over a short period of time he consumed 600
ml containing 15 g of iodide, an amount 100,000 times greater than
the RDI for iodine
. Twelve hours later he developed swelling of the
face, neck, and mouth, and had transient cardiac arrhythmias, but
made an uneventful recovery.

High doses of iodine are remarkably well tolerated. Herxheimer
gave 5 g of KI, four days on, three days off, to 2,400 asthmatic
patients and had 12 cases of myxedema and only four patients who
had swelling of the thyroid gland."

My conclusion is there is no danger for the average person to take 132 mg a day if necessary in the event of exposure to I-131.

"It should be noted that if a person has hyperthyroid (overactive), frequently they simply give him radioactive iodine to take to "kill" the gland. Thereafter, the patient takes a thyroid supplement for the rest of his or her life."

[link to www.huliq.com]

"Howver, potassium iodine cannot protect against radioactive agents, such as cesium, which was also released in the Japanese reactor explosion."

So essentially, you can use this medicine to combat radiation poisioning BUT, it may or may not be effective. AND, by using too much, you can effectively DESTROY your thyroid! Wow...that's a pretty severe side effect! Not having a thyroid not only forces you to become forever dependent on medication to supplement the thyroid, MANY issues arise from not having an operating thyroid! See here:
 Quoting: 40Head

Here's the vital information you obviously missed:

* the iodine pills are NOT RADIOACTIVE

* they are NOT THE SAME as the radioactive iodine medicine used to destroy somebody's hyperactive thyroid

* the iodine pills fill the thyroid with NON-RADIOACTIVE IODINE so that the thyroid does not absorb RADIOACTIVE IODINE from the NUKULAR DISASTER.

So you are a MORAN.

What she is saying is that the post title says potassium iodine not "potassium iodide" which is what is being distributed for the radiation poisoning

Re: Hey Potassium Iodine Tards...Read This!!! Think Twice Before Taking POTASSIUM IODINE!
Nobel Laureate Albert Szent Gyorgyi, the physician who discovered vitamin C in 1928 commented:

"When I was a medical student, iodine in the form of potassium iodide was the universal medicine. Nobody knew what it did, but it did something and did something good."

Szent Gyorgyi, is known for taking 1 gram of Potassium Iodide a day and he lived to 93.

I myself take much larger doses than 130 milligrams (a gram at certain intervals). Iodine ... esp potassium iodide has changed my life. It is not the potassium iodide that is a problem for folks it is the fact that Iodine (both Iodine & Potassium Iodide) causes a detox reaction. Today we live in a toxic cesspool. Iodine (again both forms) will cause the body to release fluoride, chlorine, bromide, mercury, aluminum, cadmium & arsenic and remove it from the body... but releasing these things can make you feel sick so it is best to go slow under normal circumstances.

For everything you ever want to know about Iodine and there is a lot to know...then go to ...
[link to www.iodine4health.com]

Iodine is NOT only for the Thyroid! Please read everything you can read about Iodine at the Iodine4health link. The doctors there have stated (audios on the site) that most are deficient in iodine and that it is important to have full body saturation of Iodine. It is also stated (again on the audios) that most pharmaceuticals (esp pain & antidepressants) would not be needed at all if we were getting enough Iodine! It is also noted that breast cancer and other cancer's could be reduced if we all were getting enough Iodine.

You can also here some of the audios here...

Iodine removes Fluoride, Bromide, Chlorine, Mercury, Aluminum, Cadmium & Arsenic...but the good essential minerals are left alone.

It also kills bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa.

IT IS FROM THE DETOX of all of these items that causes all of the symptoms you are attributing to iodine.

"Poland, 300 miles from Chernobyl, also distributed KI to protect its population. Approximately 18 million doses were distributed, with follow-up studies showing no known thyroid cancer among KI recipients."

That's a pretty big deal if you ask me. However, you're talking about the Ukraine. I'm not sure I'd trust ANY information coming from them. That being said, this is still an intersting piece of information.

Re: Hey Potassium Iodine Tards...Read This!!! Think Twice Before Taking POTASSIUM IODINE!

You MUST not be reading the entire post I made on the first page. There is AMPLE evidence that REGULAR potassium iodine in MASS quantities, as the CDC is suggesting to take, IS BAD FOR YOU!

Re: Hey Potassium Iodine Tards...Read This!!! Think Twice Before Taking POTASSIUM IODINE!
I spoke to several staff here where I work. This is a federal building. I was astonished to find out that many of the medical staff here have no idea what consequences can come from taking too much iodine! I was flabbergasted! Most of them assumed that overdosing was dangerous, but didn't know the actual reasons and how much an OD really amounted too.

I double dog dare you to take 4 hours and seriously read everything you can on this site and get the full story. But I know you won't do it because it would change you stance on this important element.

Then also listen to these audio interview by doctors involved with the Iodine Project which has been going on for the last 10 to ll years or so.

As far as the site goes, I've already read through pretty much every iodine related topic I can find. MOST of them contain false and incorrect statements, based on the information that I've obtained in my studies. I got about 6 minutes into the videos that you posted and had to stop because I'm at work. Can you detail what it is that you're talking about? So far it sounds as though these guys are saying Iodine can be bad and that we have plenty in our current food sources. Please elaborate on your statement here. Again, I only got about 6 minutes into the video so...
