That is why most people with radiation poisoning are in tents when hospitalized. If you were to let's say, kiss someone, or shake their hand and they have radioactive particles on their hands and you touch your mouth, and you ingest or inhale (really bad then..) an ionizing radiated particle it would go though your body and probably lodge somewhere and start to affect the cells in that immediate area. The more you have in your body the worse. When people are "scrubbed" down when exposed to radioactivity the people doing the scrubbing are always in NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) suits.
