Totally stunned: SAT Essay Question about "Reality Television"
This is it, America is truly falling apart.
And me and my wife were JUST talking about the failing education system last night.
The reason we got on that topic was after realizing one of her "Vocabulary" words for english 101 was "Kestrel". A european Falcon, Why in the world is this an important vocabulary word? Cant wait to use that word on my next job interview.

anyway

"Some high school students were totally stressed out by an essay question on last weekend's SAT. It didn't prompt test takers to write about D-Day or Dickens, but rather, reality television. "

Re: Totally stunned: SAT Essay Question about "Reality Television"
the question is a good one -- it allows the student to engage a genuine sociological phemonenon with a critical approach. You do not have to watch reality tv to answer. From my experience as a university prof I would rather have students who can answer questions like this than students who can regurgitate facts without processing their implications.

Re: Totally stunned: SAT Essay Question about "Reality Television"
I heard the question was something like...

What effect do reality shows like "Jersey Shore", have on American society?

Most little robots find it difficult, due to lack of analytical thinking from years of standardized testing.

Even if you've never seen the show, you should be able to concoct a "for or against" essay.

Re: Totally stunned: SAT Essay Question about "Reality Television"
While I can understand where the question is coming from? This is not the first time that I have run into this. My children have only seen television on annual visits to my parents house. We have never owned one. When my daughter (now in fourth grade) was in public school kindergarten, they had weeks based on letters of the alphabet. For 'G' week, the teacher gave them a coloring sheet of Grover from Sesame Street, playing the guitar. My daughter colored Grover red, because the only thing she had ever seen that resembled him was a toy Elmo at her friend's house.
The teacher gave her a 'sad face' because Grover was not blue.

I have been homeschooling her and her siblings for the last 4 years now for so many reasons, but this is definitely included on the list.

I certainly have no problem with the question about a European falcon. Someone that is well read would know the answer. And in this case there is a right answer.

But the question about "reality TV" is a bit more murky and I think the answer is not concrete and open to argument.

Shows such as Monster Garage, American Hot Rod, etc. although filled with drama from the people involved did also provide a great deal of technical knowledge. Other shows were just silly. How would you know what answer the person who made up the question was looking for?

THAT is problematic.

Re: Totally stunned: SAT Essay Question about "Reality Television"
Our cream no longer rises to the top, as the dumbed-down masses are given "culture" questions because they don't go to plays, symphonies, operas, ballets or any of the previous "culture-expanding" arts out there. My grandfather bemoaned the introduction of television to the masses in the fifties, claiming it would lead to no good. He was right.

We know a lot about insignificant things.

There's an American kestrel. They're quite common in the southwest. They're different than the hawks around here, considerably smaller, for one thing. So it's handy to know the correct word when you're talking about them. Just because something is outside your experience doesn't mean it's useless.

One would hope your daughter learned those words in elementary and high school. By the time you get to college, it should be about enriching an already well established vocabulary.

You complain about the dumbing down of the education system, and in the same post complain that she's being taught college level vocabulary. Odd.

There are no unimportant vocabulary words you moron.

It's called English. If you don't want to learn it, don't pass that on to your children.

As to the importance of the word "Kestrel", I suppose if you really had to ask that question you will never know.

BTW: Kestrels are also fund in Africa and America, amongst other places.

But why would that ever matter?

Re: Totally stunned: SAT Essay Question about "Reality Television"
While the students may not be able to write about transpiring events within a tv show, they should be able to formulate an opinion and translate that into a written essay. We have too long been pushed inside the box, and I feel this question takes them outside the box and that isn't bad imo. They can write the essay on why they DON'T watch reality tv and why that is a good thing.

Re: Totally stunned: SAT Essay Question about "Reality Television"
Here's something similar about the deterioration of standards in schools, so it's no surprise how the SAT is turning out.

'Reform Math'

Pay attention to what our children are being taught. Not even simple arithmetic is safe from progressive stupidity.

Apples and peaches make great neighbors. Here in "upper" Adams County, Pennsylvania (also the seat of Gettysburg and the battlefields), there are twenty thousand acres of fruit trees. Many businesses are closed on Sundays, and "traffic" consists of getting stuck behind a combine or waiting for the flock of mallards that live behind the 7-11 to finish crossing Route 394. I have often compared it to Mayberry.

We moved here in June of 2005, with the first of our four children entering kindergarten in 2007. Like many other conservatives who have been caught sleeping at philosophy's wheel, we stupidly assumed that those persons running the local school district would hold values roughly in line with our own. We could not have been more wrong.
