Plenty of Horsepower: Amish Man Accused of Drag Racing in Buggy
Mar 16, 2011

You might call this alleged street racer a rebel without a car.

Police in Ashland, Ohio, say they have charged an Amish man with driving left of center after he clipped a motorist during a horse-and-buggy race.

Law enforcement officials say Jacob Raber was the man behind the reins when a horse carriage struck a car on Route 758 on Sunday, Fox 8 News reports.

Raber was reportedly racing another horse and buggy to a nearby church when he attempted to make a pass.

But when the horse-powered vehicle crossed the center line, it clipped an oncoming car, according to investigators.

Raber reportedly suffered scratches and cuts in the accident. His three passengers and the motorist escaped unharmed.

This isn't the first time police have busted a carriage driver for reckless riding.

Last year, officers in Leon, N.Y., charged a 17-year-old Amish youth with underage possession of alcohol and overdriving an animal, among other charges, after he allegedly led officers on a low-speed chase in his buggy.

Drag racing? Isn't that for dangerous fast cars? If he wanted to pass someone on the way to church that's no different than any other auto passing. And cars will need to slow to avoid the collision.

I've heard that some Amish kids are putting radio systems (large battery powered radios with booming subwoofers) in some of these horse buggies!
