So...iodine has a pretty short 1/2 life. What about cesium, cerium, plutonium, etc?

Iodine 131 has a half-life of approx 8 days.

Cesium 137 has a half-life of 30 years

Plutonium 239 has a half-life of 24,200 years

Uranium 235 has a half-life of 710,000,000,000 years (yes, that's billion)

Strontium 90 has a half-life of 28 years

...I can keep going if you want, but I think the point is made.
