Re: >>>FUKUSHIMA - Cesium 137 CONTAMINATION HIGHER than CHERNOBYL? Already 3x EPA Evacuation Trigger...why no MANDATORY Evacuation?
I had just found this article this morning, explaining that levels of Cesium-137 are used to indicate evacuation.

As it stands, levels in Fukushima are already "surprisingly high" and 3x the EPA levels for evacuation. (150 millisieverts vs 50 millisieverts recommended by the EPA)

However, nuclear engineer Shih-Yew Chen of Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois goes on to state that the samples taken near Fukushima would be the equivalent of 8 million Bq/m2...compared to 5 million Bq/m2 at the highest readings outside of Chernobyl.

Chen just said Fukushima samples are SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER than highest cesium-137 levels around Chernobyl

Is this correct? Even if it approaching Chernobyl levels, isn't this causing anyone in Japan any alarm???

Japan Soil Measurements Surprisingly High

by Jocelyn Kaiser on 25 March 2011, 6:14 PM

Meanwhile, on Wednesday the Japanese science ministry began to report measurements of cesium-137 in upland soil around the plant. The levels are highest from two points northeast of the plant, ranging from 8690 becquerels/kilogram to a high of 163,000 Bq/kg measured on 20 March from a point in Iitate about 40 kilometers northwest of the Fukushima plant

...Assuming the radiation is no more than 2 centimeters deep, Chen calculates that 163,000 Bq/kg is roughly equivalent to 8 million Bq/m2

The highest cesium-137 levels in some villages near Chernobyl were 5 million Bq/m2.

...The soil measurements are more significant for evacuation purposes than radioactivity in the air, says nuclear engineer Shih-Yew Chen of Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, because cesium dust stays underfoot while air is transient.

Levels of cesium-137 are also more important than soil readings of iodine-131, which is short-lived and more of a concern in milk and vegetables. "It's the cesium that would prompt an evacuation," says Chen.

Why no evacuation?

Because the world is more connected and demands more accountability than it did 25 years ago.

Tp call for greater evacuations means to admit failure and culpability.

This is just another hallmark of collapse. People being urge to go about business as usual despite total FUBAR circumstances.

Radioactive Cesium With A Half-Life Of Approximately 30 Years Is Being Released At About 60 Percent Of Chernobyl Levels

Why does it seem as though the nuclear crisis in Japan just keeps getting worse with each passing day? TEPCO has announced that extremely radioactive water is now leaking from reactors 1, 2, and 3 at their damaged nuclear complex. On Thursday, three workers stepped into water in reactor 3 that contained 10,000 times the normal amount of radiation. Two of the workers experienced significant radiation burns and all three were sent to the hospital. Authorities have also announced that it is very likely that the containment vessel in reactor 3 has been breached. That is extremely alarming because reactor 3 is the one that uses plutonium-uranium mixed oxide fuel ("MOX fuel"). So is plutonium being released into the surrounding environment? That would be absolutely catastrophic. But what we know is happening already is quite catastrophic. According to a recent NewScientist article, radioactive iodine-131 is being released at 73% of the level that it was being released at during the Chernobyl disaster. But iodine-131 only has a half-life of about 8 days. According to that same article, radioactive cesium-137 is being released at 60% of the level that it was being released at during the Chernobyl disaster. Cesium-137 has a half-life of approximately 30 years. That means that all of this cesium is going to be with us for a very, very long time.

Also, it is important to keep in mind that the Chernobyl disaster only burned for 10 days.

The damaged reactors at Fukushima are still emitting radioactive material and will probably be for quite a while.

In addition, the Fukushima complex contains a whopping 1760 tons of nuclear material.

Chernobyl only contained 180 tons.

So all those that are claiming that the Fukushima disaster could not possibly eclipse the Chernobyl disaster are completely delusional.

Most of the media coverage about the radiation coming from Fukushima in recent days has focused on radioactive iodine, but the truth is that cesium may be the greater threat over the long-term.

The recent article in NewScientist mentioned above described what happens when cesium and iodine enters the human body....

Bloomberg:

Status Reports on the Reactors at Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Plant: Table

No. 1: Contaminated water in the turbine structure contains 10,000 times the radiation of regular cooling water, NHK said. The company has started removing contaminated water from the basement of the turbine building and will prepare more pumps to drain the water, the agency said. The unit has been damaged since a March 12 hydrogen explosion destroyed the building’s walls. The seriousness of the reactor’s threat to safety is rated level five on an international scale of 1-7.

No. 2: Contaminated water in the turbine structure contains 10 million times more radiation than normal cooling water, NHK said. The company plans to remove contaminated water as early as today, the agency said. The company plans to start using freshwater on fuel pool from March 28, the agency said. The containment chamber may have been damaged in a March 15 explosion, and a power cable was reconnected to the unit on March 19. The reactor is rated a level-five threat.

No. 3: Contaminated water in the turbine structure contains 10,000 times the normal radiation, NHK said. The company is considering ways to remove the contaminated water, the agency said. A March 14 explosion damaged the unit’s fuel cover. The reactor is rated a level-five threat.

@oldboldpilot you are right....I am married to a Japanese and have a child here-my wife would happily see me and our son safe ie leave for Europe but she does not want to leave. The ties the Japanese have to their country, the culture added to lack of news on the situation is really evident to me.
In another situation it might not be cause for worry but I am having nightmares about the consequences of all this.

So, evacuation may be a subject coming up for discussion soon...

...and as we've discussed here...the question is WHERE do you put these people?

Japan doesn't have a lot of free space, and if people are already exposed to radiation, they may be suffering from health problems in coming years.

This whole thing is about to get surreal very fast

Radiation soars near reactors

Confusion and fear jump in Japan as contamination dramatically increases,
writes MICHAEL SHERIDAN in Tokyo

Ottawa Citizen March 27, 2011 4:04 AM

Even the calm Japanese public is reacting with confusion to reports citing unfamiliar data that give little definition of real risk.

In an attempt to save electricity for heating, the Emper-or, 77, has reportedly told officials: "I am not cold, because I can put on extra clothes."

The imperial family have also opened baths at their country villa not far from Fukushima to local people in need of hot water and a good scrub, much loved by the Japanese.

Chinese explaination. Okay. So now that the numbers ARE that high, let's see if the govt moves people out of harm's way....

[link to mdn.mainichi.jp]

Govt may have avoided direct evacuation order to prevent panic

The voluntary evacuation recommendation given to people living in the area 20 to 30 kilometers from the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant was conveyed to affected municipalities the night before the government's announcement to avoid confusion, it has been learned.

The government apparently avoided invoking the Nuclear Disaster Special Measures Law and ordering an evacuation to prevent fear among local residents.

At the same time, the voluntary evacuation recommendation -- which is an extralegal measure -- may be aimed at easing criticism from local residents whose lives had been disrupted living under the prolonged "remain indoors" order.

"An evacuation order will be considered if radiation values that are high and remain high are detected," said the source.

In 1919, Paul Valery wrote---

We later civilizations . . . we too know that we are mortal.

We had long heard tell of whole worlds that had vanished, of empires sunk without a trace, gone down with all their men and all their machines into the unexplorable depths of the centuries, with their gods and their laws, their academies and their sciences pure and applied, their grammars and their dictionaries, their Classics, their Romantics, and their Symbolists, their critics and the critics of their critics. . . . We were aware that the visible earth is made of ashes, and that ashes signify something. Through the obscure depths of history we could make out the phantoms of great ships laden with riches and intellect; we could not count them. But the disasters that had sent them down were, after all, none of our affair.

Elam, Ninevah, Babylon were but beautiful vague names, and the total ruin of those worlds had as little significance for us as their very existence. But France, England, Russia...these too would be beautiful names. Lusitania too, is a beautiful name. And we see now that the abyss of history is deep enough to hold us all. We are aware that a civilization has the same fragility as a life.

Fukushima too is a beautiful name.
