But now they are giving out serious warnings of course. They must block the most important highway bridge between Tyrol and Bavaria near Kufstein. This will cause severe restrictions in transit traffic between Bavaria and Italy. The water Inn river is still on the rise, it already jumped over the banks. |

We did not have the worst of it, but no, there was not a warning to my knowledge. We did have twelve straight hours of wind, thunder, and lightning which was odd in its length and intensity on Sunday night. The problem lately has been the volatility of the weather, the swiftness of the change from sun to wind and storms. There is little if any time or ability to predict. A few people drown each week´end because they have camped close to streams which rise unexpectedly with the weather change. The weather models here do not work anymore. Swiss meteorologists used to be the best...you knew weather hour by hour....now it is just like the rest of the world. Who know what and when. I am just reading the newspaper which has in the headlines : Switzerland "flagellated" by bad weather. Mudslides and floods and collapse of buildings after strong rains in the north, especially Lucerne area. It is interesting that there are two accompanying articles which talk about how all the extreme weather and catastrophes of recent years "are not really that unusual." Love to Mother Earth Always |

The large tide The Ill in Bludenz became a rapid river. Until Tuesday noon one had hoped in the operations center in the Tiroler country house in Innsbruck to get over the flood without dead ones or hurt one. Then this hope was there. In length field in the Oetztal a dead one and heavy a hurting were to be deplored. A 29-jaehriger man from Soelden was killed in a Tischlereibetrieb released by a steinlawine, by the constant rainfalls, a teammate was heavily hurt. The tide cost thereby already two human lives, after on Monday a woman was killed by a Mure. Underestimated National captain vice Ferdinand Eberle (national captain Herwig van Staa stays with Minister Guenther of flat in Afghanistan) had to announce a Hiobsbotschaft after the other one: "the flood failed by far more strongly, than we estimated still this morning. We have that the precipitation dies down somewhat in former times, as this now the case will be hoped." From the helicopter the whole extent of the damage visibly became: Most badly the Paznauntal is concerned, which had been already pulled with the avalanche disaster by Galtuer 1999 heavily in. 30 per cent of the road system are destroyed. Partially also the new avalanche shelters. Badly it got also the Ausserfern, which was completely cut off of the remaining Tirol. The Tiroler national advice Konrad Streiter: "there the situation is also bad, but visible and for a long time not as badly as in the Paznaun." Since the early morning the situation in Innsbruck sharpened itself too. The Inn reached the highest level of 6.5 meters at 12 o´clock noon, afterwards he stepped for the first time with the university over the banks. Vice-mayor Michael Bielowski: "within nine hours the water level doubled itself." Temporarily therefore all bridges in the city had to become closed. , then Bielowski was afraid a wooden pedestrian bar, one will probably lose. Merrily Pure hard Moser, boss of the traffic police, appealed to the Tiroler to undertake only urgent travels with the car. Merry were requested to leave the bank range. The flood had become for tourists the "attraction". Within the range of the Innsbrucker hospital the task forces tried to evacuate the wassermassen. "the groundwater rose there strongly", described fire-brigade boss Erwin Reichel. Altogether 550 firefighters and freiwillige were in the use on Tuesday. Buergermeisterin Hilde Zach had to be able to be conveyed the events in their city by telephone. Because also for it no coming through was possible to Innsbruck because of the numerously closed roads. Minister Josef Proell, responsibly for the disaster fund, promised rapid assistance. It had made itself a picture of devastations, just as Hubert fermenting brook, which had inserted a short intermediate stop into Tirol, before it flew on into its homeland Vorarlberg. Also Minister of Finance Karl-Heinz Grasser promised the tide victims Tuesday unbureaucratic assistance on the part of the federation. Shock in the Laendle Rapid tides, gigantic Muren and rockslides, in inaccessible localities and weilern enclosed humans and crisis staffs without connection to the local employment centers, cut off by each supply: The August flood of the yearly 2005 shifted also Vorarlberg over night temporarily into the condition of a developing country. There was often no river, the telephones was dead, even the ORF was because of destroyed transmitting plants no longer everywhere to be received. In addition innumerable roads and motorway sections were inundated or destroyed and the railway traffic completely broken down. Terrible hours experienced the inhabitants of the small municipality Reuthe in the Bregenzerwald. Inundated houses were evacuated. Suddenly it came in a building to an explosion. Six, partly heavily hurt inhabitants could be saved only with trouble. Missed In the silver valley a 81-jaehriger inhabitant is missed. He had been fallen and driven off with his passenger car by the destroyed road into the rapid Litz. In lech the vice-mayor in the flood employment was hurt. In already in July the badly afflicted Mittersill in the Pinzgau there was Tuesday again flood alarm. Salt oh with 4.5 a critical mark had reached meters. Also in new churches at the Grossvenediger the river threatened to slosh over the artificially established dam. In Fusch to the Glocknerstrasse had pioneers an auxiliary bridge over those Fu Ache to build, since tides had away-torn the original bridge. In the Steiermark however the situation relaxed somewhat. In gases, where the tide had demanded a first victim at the night to Monday, further Murenabgaenge threatened. The federal army blew up a slope, which threatened to slip. Evacuations remained however partly upright. Danube The situation at the Danube is still relatively stable. The levels rose Tuesday continuously, it gave however still no alarm values. In the late evening hours or at the night however the early warning stage could be achieved. Thus are however only Treppelwege, uferstrassen and leisure facilities endangered. |

While the situation defused itself there by leaving rain a little, the levels in the interior rise. The Danube neighbors expect inundations. Munich - the most violent rainfalls for years released a tide disaster on Tuesday in far parts of South Bavaria. Numerous places in Upper Bavaria and in the Allgaeu were flooded by the flood and cut off by the external world. The inhabitants were saved by boats and helicopters, brought hundreds in security. In several districts disaster alarm prevailed into the night. Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder wants to inform on Thursday with an attendance planned for a long time in Augsburg about the situation in Bavaria. It assured all erdenklichen assistance of the federation to the Free State. Leaving rainfalls defused the situation at the alpine edge in the Allgaeu and in the region in the evening around mixing part churches. In the interior Isar and Danube continued to swell however. There the situation sharpens itself too. Ulm released already flood alarm. The city is to stand briefly before flooding. Also in Passau and Regensburg auxiliary workers expect that the rivers step over the banks. In rose home the Inn rose dramatically, parts of water castle was already in the evening flooded. The Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber assured to the tide victims with an attendance in the Eschenlohe heavily concerned assistance. On Wednesday it starts an information tour by the Bavarian flood areas. mixing godfather churches was up to the evening of the external world cut off, after the Loisach in several places had stepped over the banks. The small brook Kanker swelled to the rapid river on. Also in Austria the situation is further chaotic. The city Innsbruck announced "country under". Numerous places in the west Tirols and Vorarlbergs were completely cut off of the external world. The telephone connection broke down, likewise the current and water supply. Also far parts of German Switzerland stood under water, many places were not attainable. In the capital many humans could move themselves Berne only with boats, in Luzern the historical buildings with walls and sand bags against the tides of the constantly rising Vierwaldstaetter of lake were protected. |

Days of fierce downpours across Switzerland, Austria and Germany have left lakes and rivers bursting their banks, which in turn cut off roads, power and communications from hundreds of communities. Mudslides blocked roads and railway tracks while some bridges were swept away by the force of floodwaters. “We have had to carry out rescue activities since last night by helicopter because we just can’t get through (with boats) anymore. The current is just too strong,” police spokesman Thomas Jeuch said in the Swiss capital, Berne. Part of Berne old town was flooded and without power after the swollen Aare river burst its banks. Police said water levels continued to rise. “It will get worse before it gets better,” spokesman Franz Maerki said. Some residents waved for help from balconies while others used their mobile phones to call rescuers. Forecasters said the weather could get worse with more rain expected in the coming days. “There is the risk that there could be another worsening of the situation,” Thomas Buechli, a weather forecaster said on Swiss television. Seven people have died and thousands evacuated from their homes in Switzerland as floods spread from the Alps in central Switzerland to the eastern region bordering Austria. Government relief efforts In Austria, the death toll rose to three on Wednesday and a fourth person was missing, feared drowned, in the Vorarlberg region near the Swiss border, police said. Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel called an emergency cabinet meeting for Wednesday afternoon to discuss relief efforts and ministers promised aid for the millions of euros lost by farmers and homeowners. As rain eased in Austria’s far western regions and in the Tyrol, hundreds of people were still cut off in valley villages. Around 17,000 firefighters helped by soldiers began repairing roads, pumping out basements and clearing mud from highways, bridges and railway lines. In Germany, large tracts of land around Kochelsee and Bad Toelz in Bavaria were still under water though officials in the southern region said flood dangers had eased. Thousands of sandbags were protecting the town of Neu-Ulm, which lies between the Danube and Iller rivers, to prevent floodwater reaching houses and other buildings. Swiss railway said services remained disrupted in central parts of the country and the Bernese Alps. Goods transits through the Gotthard tunnel, part of Switzerland’s major north-south transport route, was stopped. Water levels in Lake Lucerne, at the foot of some of Switzerland’s tallest mountains, also rose on Wednesday, albeit more slowly, local police said. In parts of central Switzerland, more rain had fallen in three days than normally in the whole of August, weather forecasters said. Roads in the center of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destination of Lucerne were awash and drinking water supplies in nearby villages contaminated. Electricity and telephone lines in parts of country remained cut off. In the mountainous eastern region of Switzerland, parts of the village of Klosters — which hosts Britain’s Prince Charles for ski vacations each winter — were submerged and householders were taken to a local community center . In Romania, one of the countries worst hit by the downpours that lashed parts of central Europe earlier this week, the death toll from flooding rose by six to 31 on Thursday, with another three people missing, including a 4-year-old girl. Eight people have died and thousands were evacuated from their homes in Switzerland and Austria, where the toll rose to four on Thursday when searchers found the body of an 81-year-old man missing since his car tumbled into a swollen river. The torrential rains forced lakes and rivers to burst their banks from Bern to Bucharest, cutting roads, power and communications to hundreds of communities and causing damage estimated at worth well over $1 billion in Switzerland alone. In Bern, helicopters lifted Swiss residents from roofs and balconies of their homes in the oldest part of town, where they were trapped by the waters. Officials fear centuries-old buildings could be swept away. In Lucerne, sandbags protected shops and homes and residents watched anxiously as the Reuss River rushed perilously close beneath the city’s covered 14th-century wooden bridge -- a national landmark. “Right now the water level is falling, but we just do not know what is going to happen next,” civil protection official Rene Bieri told Reuters. Swiss expect another inch Forecasters said the weather could get worse with a further inch of rain expected later in the week over Switzerland. Driftwood has been swept into lakes and rivers and now threatens to smash bridges and other installations, rescue officials said. The Swiss army was using helicopters to supply the scenic mountain resort of Engelberg, which has been cut off since Monday by rain that also sent part of the railway line plunging down a ravine. One of the 700 tourists evacuated by air on Wednesday from the village told Swiss television they had been without hot food, clean water and electricity. Not all tourists were unhappy. “It was like a carnival here last night, with everybody crowding the streets,” said Australian Ray Condon as he squeezed along a wooden walkway in Lucerne. “Everybody was out taking pictures.” But the Swiss authorities have warned sightseers to stay away from the floodwaters, worried about a sudden rise in river levels or more flash floods. Flooding elsewhere Southern Germany: A 28-year-old man drowned when he ventured out with two friends in a dinghy that capsized on the Mangfall River near the town of Feldkirchen-Westerham. He was the first person to die in Germany in the floods, which have turned regions of Bavaria into disaster zones. The other two men were rescued. Bavarian authorities said the crisis had eased in several areas but the situation remained critical along parts of the River Danube. Romania: The latest deaths were from the Transylvanian region of Harghita. “I lost everything,” a young villager told Realitatea TV station. “I saw floodwaters carry away a big bus parked near my home.” Floods across the country have killed 67 so far this year. The government estimates the damage as worth $1.8 billion. Austria: Crews were using heavy equipment to clear away tons of mud, gravel and rocks dumped inside hundreds of homes, hotels and businesses in mountain valleys in Vorarlberg and neighboring Tyrol province. “You feel like you have fallen into a deep hole,” homeowner Hubert Brunner told the Austrian newspaper Tiroler Tageszeitung about losing his house, ripped apart by water and rocks when the neighboring river flooded.
