Just spent the last hour talking with police about suspicious letter in my mailbox

Today my neighbor across called police in regard to a suspicious letter he received. The letter had no return address; the stamp was not processed for postage and was in a self sealing envelope. (Letter was delivered by mailman) I check my mailbox and had a similar letter; as did three of my other neighbors.

I, being CrazyBud, opened the letter upwind to check content. Everyone jumped back. It was a portrait processing flyer. The police officer collected the letter for evidence (had put on rubber gloves). The police officer observed a phone number on the flyer and called it. It was legit.

He said the letters will be turned over to the postal service to investigate why they were delivered in this manner.

I think it was a vulnerability probe to collect data to assess soft targets. Thank God I have vigilant neighbors.

The real issue is why the mailman is delivering mail with no return address and un-processed postage. This type of mail usually begs for postal inspection. Second, the portrait company may have hired a third party to handle the flyers, but who are they and how did these letters bypass postal processing. Seems very suspicious.
